Musical Moves was established as a CIC (not for profit) L.T.D company in February 06.
Over the following 12 months we spent time writing are policies and procedures as well as researching possible funders and partners. The National Council for Social Concern kindly supported us by awarding a £2,500 start up grant to cover legal fees,as well as the aqizition of promotional and administrative tools. During this time we also submitted various funding applications with a view to funding two 2 day pilot projects. Unfortunately they were unsuccessful.Once again with the support from Andy Silsby (NCSC Board Member), we were encouraged to submit budget proposals to fund the projects. Musical Moves identified the Crew Club in Brighton and Studio 3 Arts as potential partners. After preliminary meetings an agreement was made to work together on the projects.

Toward the end of 06 NCSC awarded us a £5,000 grant to fund the projects, during Feb - April 07 we attended planning meeting with both parties to establish our aims and objectives . The August 07 summer break was agreed as a delivery period, we then successfully delivered the projects to Crew Club members directly on site at the crew club. Studio 3 Arts requested that we submit a new budget for a 5 day workshop, with the agreement that they would seek funding to cover the 3 extra days. that funding was awarded to them on the basis of the project coming under the umbrella of their existing Big Deal outreach programme in partnership with Musical Moves . We delivered the project during August 07 to a group of young people who attend the Albermarle Youth House, in the london Borough of Havering in cooperation with the Youth Service in the area.

Both projects were very successful and the evaluation of the projects are detailed in this report. December 07 will be first accounting period as a company L.T.D by guarantee.

Moving Forward

We hope to build on our existing relationship with our partners as well as find new avenues of funding and groups to deliver future projects. Musical Moves hope to engage with as many young socially and economically disadvantaged young people as possible. We are presently identifying young people in need who are in receipt of services from the probation service, penal institutions, as well as exclusion units and individuals/group at risk of offending.

Currently Musical Moves is at the planning stages of accessing funding for the support and delivery of a project to a group of young people with disabilities. Who have experience in Music and the Arts but are in need of opportunities,s support and facilitation to realize their creative hopes and dreams.

We would like to extend our thank all the parties who have supported and encouraged us, as well as the young people who have participated, shared ,in the journey and who have responded so positively to our facilitation, vision and values.

Crew Club

Background: On the weekend of (4th -5th August 07) Musical Moves (Paul Emile, Jim Mortimore and Michael Bowes) ran a two day workshop with members of the Crew Club, Brighton to create a short performance of original music for friends and family.

Participants ranged from the age of 11 to 17 years old and over the two days 12 young people took part. The young people’s previous music experience ranged from those who had never played or taken part in a live music performance, to those with some skill, to those who perform regularly as part of an established band (Sonny, Crew Club music development worker)

Over the two days Musical Moves led the participants in a range of activities to develop their musical skills, confidence and working as part of a team to enable them to perform live to their invited audience.  Activities included;
• Guitar, Vocal and Drum Workshops
• Band and Ensemble Lyric & Composition
• Song writing & Arrangement
• Sound & Lighting techniques
• Self Advocacy
By the end of the weekend, participants show increased skills in (Musical Composition) (Instrumentation) and (Song writing) to create a 45 min live performance with lights, projections and smoke machine.

•	Enclosed copy of the August Crew Club newsletter featuring the Musical Moves workshop on page two

•	In addition a CD was produced with (8) tracks and a DVD of the full performance

Outcomes: Based on the positive feedback from participants and club manager, Musical Moves is now in the process of identifying additional funding to support a larger piece of work with the Crew Club, to build on the pilot’s success and reach more members, across age group and gender. An initial application to the Clore Duffield Foundation was unfortunately unsuccessful – but we are confident that we will be able to secure funding for future partnership work.

“Having worked with many groups over the years I would like to say how impressed I was with the approach and ability of Musical Moves in working with a group of young men all with different musical ability and levels of attention span, partially the younger people that took part.”

Darren Snow Manager – The Crew Club

Dear Musical Moves,

As the Manager of the Crew Club I would like to provide feedback for the weekend workshops that I attended on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th August put on by Musical Moves in partnership with The Crew Club.

Having worked with many groups over the years I would like to say how impressed I was with the approach and ability of Musical Moves in working with a group of young men all with different musical ability and levels of attention span, partially the younger people that took part.

The sessions also benefited the Crew Club’s Music Development Worker by providing the opportunity to work with Paul, Jim and Mickey and feel fully included in the work they were aiming to achieve over the weekend session.
Having only two sessions to deliver a live performance to family and friends the young people and workers from the Crew Club and Musical Moves put in 100% to achieve their goals. It was great to see the working methods and styles of Paul, Jim and Mickey from Musical Moves.

It is also very rewarding for the young people to work with such great musicians and this can only bring out the best in those that work with them.
I was also very impressed with the way the sessions rotated around different rooms and different musical techniques and styles. For example facilities used were the main hall for the live performance, the music studio for vocal tuition and the training room for instrument practice and lyric writing. This also gave the young people the opportunity to be part of all the different aspects of the workshop and not just focus on one area.

Musical Moves also engaged with the young people at the right level for the individual and not just the group as a whole, this provided an opportunity for the young people to gain far more then they would have done if it was just about working with the needs of the group. For some of the young people they have never played an instrument before and yet after just two sessions they took part in a live performance in front of friends, family but also in front of strangers.

It was a pleasure working with Musical Moves and I know that all the young people that took part gained so much from the weekend. This is something that we would be very interested in replicating in the future.

Yours sincerely
Darren Snow

                                                             Studio 3 Arts

Background: On the week of 13th -17th August 07 Musical Moves (Paul Emile, Jim Mortimore and Michael Bowes) ran a five day workshop with members of the Albermarle Youth Club, Romford, London to create a short performance of original music for a mix audience, including friends and family, local council representative, members of Studio 3 Arts and Havering Youth Services.

Participants ranged from the age of 11 to 17 years old and over the five days 16 young people took part, including two young people with disabilities. The young people’s previous music experience ranged from those who had never played or taken part in a live music performance, to those with some skill, to those who perform regularly as part of an established band (Lee, Youth Service Manager)

Over the 5 days Musical Moves led the participants in a range of activities to develop their musical skills, confidence and working as part of a team to enable them to perform live to their invited audience.  Activities included;
• Guitar, Vocal and Drum Workshops
• Band and Ensemble Lyric & Composition
• Song writing & Arrangement
• Sound & Lighting techniques
• Self Advocacy
• Peer support development

In addition, the Musical Move team were able to support and develop the skills of two newly qualified youth workers by modelling positive interaction and project delivery, enabling them to support the project participants to take part more fully.

By the end of the week, participants showed increased skills in musical composition instrumentation and song writing, creating a 45 min live performance with lights, projections, smoke machine and with two young people as compeers – confidently introducing each act.

The aim of this pilot programme was originally to develop existing links with Studio 3 Arts, by delivering a new programme of work in partnership. Whilst the week was very positive and participants got a lot out of it, the working approaches of Studio 3 Arts and Musical Moves were not as compatible as originally thought. However, difference of opinion and approach did not in any way hamper participant’s enjoyment or engagement with the programme; it did mean that Musical Moves were not treated as equal partners, but rather service providers. Feedback from parents and the youth provision was in favor of a future relationship, Musical Moves hope to work in partnership with Studio 3 Arts in future.

Dear Sirs,

Reference: Musical Moves Music Project 13 – 17 August 2007

I am pleased to inform you that the above project run in partnership with Paul Emile of Musical Moves, Studio 3 Arts and the Havering Youth Support Service was a resounding success.

The young people (12 in all) who participated in the interactive and innovative workshops over a period of five days were given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities where they learned to play various instruments, write their own lyrics as a group and have fun.

Paul and his team of professional musicians encouraged the young people to try new things and develop their musical skills at whatever level the young people felt comfortable and learn to work together as a group. As the young people were of different ages and mixed abilities, this was very challenging at times, but Paul and his team built good relationships with the young people and by the end of the week they had all grown in confidence and were able to perform ten songs at a reasonably high level of skill in front of a live audience. Considering the fact that some of them had little or no prior experience of playing an instrument, this was an amazing achievement.

This can be evidenced by our own evaluation of the project, which enabled the participants of give feedback of their experience throughout the week and a video recording that was made of their performance on the last day. All the young people have said that they enjoyed taking part in such an exciting initiative and would like to do more projects like it.

On a more personal note, I would thoroughly recommend Paul Emile of Musical Moves to anyone who is interested in giving young people a chance to make their own music around the issues that affect them, as he really knows how to enthuse them in a non threatening way.
My staff team and I enjoyed working alongside him and his team and would love to do it again next year.
