Jim had a very successful trip to Rwanda where he was part of team “Solace “a charitable concern who went out to offer their practical support to young singers and musicians in kigali. They raised substantial funding to build and complete a state of the art recording studio as well as recording an album of some of the talented young people they met. I felt “privileged to be apart of the aniative to support the young people with their music making” , and made lots of friends along the way. I donated my time ,skills, for 3 weeks and i am committed to following up the support of Solace  in africa. At  present i am currently mastering the album in the UK and helping to organize a tour  for the young people to play their songs to european audiences  in the autumn 09 .

Below are some pics from my trip.

March 09

We have just completed the first part of Jump In at the Crew Club. The workshop went well and was well attended over the 5 days, the young people were enthusiastic and committed to the project. It was great to have Emily on board and she is as well as being a great dancer /choreographer, a nice person who had an instant re-pour with the young people attending the project. She was very effective in engaging individuals during our taster session in early feb at the club, and was definitely responsible for certain individuals attending the full workshop dates.

As part of our commitment to the Crew Club as requested by Darren(Manager) we supported some of the young people who attended and performed at the workshop gig. To reprise some of those performances at their general meeting held at the brighton centre on 18th march. The evening went well with a big audience made up of young people, funders, dignitaries, councillors, and friends and family. It was a first time for us at Musical Moves to see all that the club provide and achieve on behalf of its members and the wider community. We were very impressed and the performances were great from the young people.  I gave a short speech on behalf of Musical Moves and gave Darren certificates for all of the young people who attended the workshop.

Jim and i would like to thank all of the young people for all their hard work and commitment. Special thanks goes out to Darren, Lorraine, Kevin,Ricky, at the club and the mums who made us tea and lunch during the week . And of course our freelancers  Tom Arnold, Michael Bowes, Emily Katsano,Theseus, and Phil Rose.

Musical  Moves would like to announce that we are presently looking at setting up some percussion workshops for young people with disabilities.  At present we are collecting instruments that would be ideal for the young people to use. Through are long experience of delivering programs, workshops, sessions, to groups of young people with needs  as session leaders, freelancers. It seems the ideal time to get started.

I was very pleased to be invited by Tom Arnold one of the M.Moves team to co deliver a jam night at the Orpheus Centre. Tom has been working at the centre since our time as freelancers with the Herbie Flowers “Rock Shop”. Which Tom reminded me stretches back to 99 onward, my last visit was 05 with one of Herbies courses. It was nice to see some familiar faces, and of course some who remembered me. Many students had moved on, but Patrick Aspel was someone who i clicked with the first time we worked together. It was nice to see him and hear about how things were going(we share a mutual appreciation of all things funky).  We all had a great night and lots of fun.

June 09

Jim and i had a very productive evaluation meeting with Kevin Grist (Crew CluBs, Music,Media&Arts project worker), the result can be found in  the “Jump In” report .

Following the meeting we sent the report and Dvds of the final performance/AGM showcase to Urike & Fritz in Austria. We are hoping to deliver “Jump In “ phase 2 at the Youth House, Modling, in the autumn 09.

I was asked by Tom Arnold to cover 2 music workshop sessions for him while he was away in America. The sessions were at the Kite Club, Epsom, the participants were a group of people with disabilities. They were a big group with varied abilities, i very much enjoyed the sessions and got very good feedback from the participants and the organizer Dorothy . The group had been well established over many years, certain individuals seemed to lead the main group and i found myself having to facilitate the less vocal members of the group more. It was fantastic to see just how much the participants enjoyed each others company and the chance to play, sing and dance together. Hopefully they appreciated i have a different style to Tom!, he was sorely missed by some members   of whom i had to constantly remind them of the date of his return.

The opportunity to facilitate this group has definitely given me lots of ideas for Musical Moves.

July/August 09

Musical Moves has been approached to generate a music therapy intervention program  to deliver  to a young person with complex needs. The sessions would be on a one to one basis working in the persons home, and some additional group sessions in a local accessible space. The sessions would make up part of the young persons new weekly services interventions and timetabled activities due to begin  in september 09. We are very pleased to be asked to be involved in such an important  step in the individuals development and client centered service provision.

We have had 3 meetings with the parents of the young person and liaised with their  community support & outreach worker. gradually we are putting together a framework for which to engage the young person. We have bought specialist pieces of equipment with her in mind,as well as sourced a local space for her to work in .

Musical Moves will be using additional sensory adaptations and materials in these sessions. Which will create a new and exciting ways to deliver our musical interventions. Expanding the way we work and with new client groups.

(The basis of this work in the first instance is strictly confidential, it is hoped as time goes on  we will have approval to share some of the development of the service.)

August/ September 09

Musical Moves are happy to announce that we will be piloting a

Music & Percussion Workshop at the Somers Town community centre in Camden, london from October 09. The idea will be to encourage participation from young people in the community who have disabilities. Historically  the centre in the past offered music sessions for this group , but ceased due to lack of funding. We hope to work closely with Francis Holloway(experienced centre worker) to make links and invite individuals and groups to attend.

We will be publicizing the twice monthly sessions locally from October - December. it is hoped that if successful we can go forward and seek to joint fund future workshops with the community centre and/or local interested parties

“Watch this space for updates”

Musical Moves would like to thank the staff and management of

Safestore Charlton Street, Camden, for donating storage space for our instruments and backline gear. They have done so since september 08 and we hope to continue with their support.
