iSpy on iPad

The iSpy series, created by Jean M, has long been a engaging source of interactive reading and entertainment for kids young and old.  iPad allows for interactivity with an image (pinch and zoom) that facilitates the iSpy experience.  Higher level and creative thinking is employed by students when they create personalized iSpy collages, complete with rhyming riddles, so that others may enjoy solving on mobile devices.

Workflow for this project includes:

  1. 1.Design the iSpy collage

Students collect objects (potentially centered around a “theme) from home or their classroom and layout the collage on their desktop.  Themes may include bathroom, mom’s purse, teacher’s desk drawer, math class, etc. Consider a bright colored background of construction paper or other materials.

  1. 2.Capture images

Take digital photos of the desktop collages of students. It is recommended to import photos into an iPhoto album, crop the images, and print or distribute digitally to the students to assist them in composing their riddles.

  1. 3.Write riddles

Use this template to help students generate their riddles with appropriate rhyme and rhythm patterns.

  1. 4.Publish in Keynote

Use this template and ask students to replace the image with their iSpy collage photo and the text with their iSpy riddle. Export Keynote slides as images and combine the class’s images into one folder.

  1. 5.Interact on iPad or iPod touch

Import the folder of images (exported Keynote slides) into iPhoto and create an album.  Set up your iPad or iPod touch sync settings to sync that album from iPhoto.  Launch photos on the iPad or iPod touch and pinch and zoom to find the items or swipe to advance to the next iSpy riddle.
