iScavenger Hunt

iPod devices allow for ultimate mobility while at the same time having access to an engaging multimedia learning device.  In this example, a physical education teacher creates audio scavenger hunts for students as an innovative way for students to collaborate, problem-solve, and get exercise.

Workflow for this project includes:

  1. 1.Plan the scavenger hunt clues

Find places spread out on the school grounds and create clues as to how to get there (other skills can be incorporated into the clues such as geographic directions, math facts, etc.).

  1. 2.Record audio clues

Using GarageBand, record each clue as a separate file and send each to iTunes.  Create an iTunes playlist with all the tracks(clues) numbered.  Create an audio set of directions to accompany the scavenger hunt clues.

  1. 3.Distribute on iPod devices

Sync the iTunes playlist to all devices.

  1. 4.Experience the Scavenger Hunt

Student teams get an iPod touch and an assigned clue to start on (to spread out the students in the scavenger hunt). Working in teams they listen to the clues and go try to locate the locations.  At each found “spot” they pick up a LETTER (we used poly spot markers and wrote letters on them).  When they have found all the “treasures” they should unscramble the letters to form the mystery word.  The first team to tell Coach the mystery word is the winner.

Alternate Adaptation:

  1. *Use iPod touch devices with built-in camera and require students to take photos of the items found at the end of each clue.  Students could rearrange photos in their Photo library on the iPod touch to unscramble the “final word” or just prove that they had solved each and every clue.

  2. *Create QR codes for the scavenger hunt “treasures” and students could scan each one that they find.
