1 - Comparing Family Behaviour - Lab Preparation
When Mendeleev designed his periodic table, he arranged the elements according to their similarities in physical and chemical properties. He placed lithium (Li), sodium (Na), and potassium (K) in the first column - the alkali metal family. He placed magnesium (Mg) and Calcium (Ca) in the second column - the alkaline earth metal family. It is now your turn to determine why Mendeleev grouped these elements together. What common behaviour do they exhibit? Why are they placed in that particular sequence? - Initiate & Plan Template.pdf
2 - Submit Plan and initial Lab Report for approval
3 - Conduct Lab and Demonstration (if time)
Safety Precautions:
- Handle all chemicals with the scopula or tongs. Do not use your bare hands.
- Wear safety glasses when around chemicals.
- Use caution around the hot water. It’s hot.
- Don’t directly breathe any vapours.
- Use only small amounts of your chemicals. Large amounts will cause an unusually large explosion.
Today’s Learning Goal
I will demonstrate that I can plan and conduct a safe scientific investigation.
