Father Emmanuel, a Tamil Catholic Priest with a church in Akkaraipattu on Sri Lanka’s east coast, established the Emmaus Children’s home following the 2004 Tsunami. As the tsunami refugees returned home the Father began receiving children from families displaced by the conflict in the north and east. Father Emmanuel, recently completed construction of a new building which is now home to over 50 children. Due to ongoing tensions between the Tamil and Muslims in Akkaraipattu, Father Emmanuel has twice found himself alone in the village protecting the children in the church sanctuary after the other Tamil residents fled due to outbreaks of violence in the community.
