The Mehndi Ceremony
A Mehndi ceremony is one of the bride's most important pre-wedding rituals. It's a fun filled ritual celebrated mainly by the bride's family and usually held at the bride's family house on the eve of the marriage ceremony or a few days before. Generally the bride and groom attend the event together. A professional henna artist or a relative applies mehndi to the bride's hands and feet creating intricate designs and often hidingthe name or initials of the groom within the pattern .
The event has a celebratory feel with the women dancing and singing traditional songs, and the girls wearing vivid colours such as hot pink and yellow. And if the bride wants to tease her future groom she makes him wear purple.
According to custom, the bride should not leave the house after the mehndi ritual until the wedding day. It's believed that the darker and deeper the henna stains, the more the husband and the in-laws will love her. The Mehndi ritual signifies the strength and power of love in a marriage, and is considered a good omen for the bride-to-be. It's also believed that the longer the bride retains the mehndi, the more auspicious her future will be.
