To celebrate this new web site, the video Earth Fire Sky and the poster portfolio Korean Ceramics: Reflections of Korean Character, both of which we produced, are now  available in limited numbers to the general public.  They are normally available only through our workshops.

Now in DVD form, the video Earth Fire Sky is a brief visit with four Korean craftspeople who continue ancient traditional ways of working with clay.  It provides insight into their lives, their philosophy and their artistry.  It explores how these ceramic craftspeople work with earth to create objects that grace the earth and sky and use fire to make them permanent.

We hope the viewer gains a better understanding of these processes, a deeper appreciation for Korean culture and are inspired to use ideas from these ancient Korean ceramic processes to create new objects of art.  The price is$29.95 including shipping in the continental USA.

We met Adam Field recently at our friend Kim Il Mann’s onggi studio in Yeoju.  We were hosting The 2008 International Ceramic Artist’s Tour that traveled throughout Korea visiting many of Korea’s best ceramic artists in their studios.  Years ago, we featured Kim Il Mann’s son, Kim Chang Ho, in our video Earth Fire Sky on ancient Korean ceramic processes.  It is great to see this series of comprehensive videos on onggi by Adam on YouTube.

Book: The World of Korean Ceramics

A member of our 2008 International Ceramic Artist’s group will return to Korea this fall to study at another friend’s onggi studio.  They will study at the studio of Lee Hak Soo who lives in Bosong, one of Korea’s famous tea areas.  Kim, from Yeoju, above, uses rolled coils while Lee, from Bosong, flops slabs to build their large jars.  Both Kim Il Mann and Lee Hak Soo are Human Cultural Treasures.   Join our next Ceramics Artist’s Tour to Korea to see both of these studios, watch them work and perhaps have the opportunity to work with one of these or another great Korean potter.

made available to us by the co-author Alan Covell.  Each book is personally signed by him.

While working on this site, I discovered that thee were two used copies available on  Amazon each priced at more than $120.  Checking Amazon again as I was about to publish this site, I found they were both sold.

Our copies are limited to one per customer and to ceramic artists, collectors or art teachers who want the book for educational or research purposes.   It is not to speculators for resale.

Our price for this signed rare book is only $39.50 - the original publication price - including shipping in the continental USA.  There is a very limited number so don’t be disappointed if these books are all gone.  If you find this item, they may be still available.

Alan’s mother Jon was a friend.  Her passing was a great loss to those of us who knew her and to the English speaking world interested in information on Korean and Japanese arts and culture printed in English.  We highly recommend her and her son’s many other books.  Some can be found at Hollym Books.
