Teaching English in Korea

Our Mission

I suppose most companies save this section for some obscure part of their web site.  We want to be up front and honest with you.  Most likely, you have been to many web sites on this subject and most of them are telling you the same things.  There is so much information on some web sites it is impossible to comprehend it all.

If you work with us, we make it simple.  If you qualify to be our client, we will help you every step of the way.  We want you to understand how we are better suited to serve you as you pursue a position to teach English in Korea.  To do that, I first want to share with you why I became involved.

A little while ago I received a call from our friend Jiyoung Han, whom we have known for many years.  Jinny asked me if I would join her as she developed an additional direction for her family’s company in Korea.    Her family’s company is Asia A-B.  While you most likely have not heard of it, Asia A-B has a long and respected position in Korea.  Ms Han wanted to use her family’s company to improve the quality and service provided to those who are considering teaching English in Korea.  She believes the entire process can be done better.

When she made us this offer, our first thoughts were of our daughter, Amy, who had taught English in Korea a number of years ago.  Amy’s first experience was a negative one working long hours from early morning until late into the night with little or no chance to experience Korea.   To experience Korea was one of the reasons she went there.  She also had a less than caring administrator.  Several other teachers left their positions and went home.  Amy might have joined them had she not been determined to learn about the land of her ancestors.  However, Amy does not give up easily, was able to find a better placement and eventually had a wonderful experience - forming life long friendships.

I had many questions for Ms Han about her intentions for this new direction for her family’s company.  Most of my questions were about guaranteeing quality placements for our clients.  I am a retired university professor and department head from a College of Education.  Most of my career, I served students.  So I understand the perils and complexities of teaching.  In my semi-retirement, I work to help others see Korea in a positive light.  If I am to put my name and reputation on the line for a company, in an industry that frankly does not have the best reputation, then our company had to be significantly better.  It is not difficult to find negative statements on the web from former English teachers in Korea about their experiences.  We had to guarantee that our clients would be treated especially well.  After all, each of our teacher clients is potentially a positive or negative voice for Korea’s reputation and our company’s reputation - let alone mine.  The schools where we place our teachers would have to agree on certain conditions to insured that our teacher clients would have a quality experience in their employ.  Our company would have to treat our teacher clients at the highest level in the industry.  This meant that our  company would have to be available to our teacher clients before, during and even, potentially, after their employment in Korea.  In addition, if possible, our company would have to provide our clients opportunities while in Korea not available from other companies.  Obviously Ms Han agreed to those conditions and in fact had similar thoughts and concerns.  Otherwise you would not be reading my name associated with this endeavor.

If you have searched the web, you have found many web sites advertising placement for English teachers in South Korea.  That is because Korea provides the best ESL teaching offers in the world and needs thousands of teachers each year.

Since you are on this web site, we presume that you, a family member or friend, are considering the possibility of teaching English in South Korea.  Then you discovered us Dragonfly English, a “new company”.  You have to ask yourself, “Why would another company want to help you reach that goal? and “Why would I want to register with this ‘new company’?”  First, finding teachers to teach English in Korea is an additional direction for an old and highly respected company in Korea; a company that has over the last forty plus years gained the respect of millions of people in Korea and beyond.  This company is staking their reputation on providing you, and the schools where you will be placed, quality service.  Dragonfly English is the name we choose to represent this aspect of the business.  Our parent company has an advantage in this industry.  We have the trust of the schools in Korea because we are a Korea based company and we can work directly with you because our recruitment based in the United States with representatives in several other English speaking countries.  Most other companies are one or the other but not both.

In Korean business, it is paramount that a bond of trust exists.  It takes years to establish that trust.  That is why most other companies in this business sell their teacher client information to brokers in Korea to be placed at the various schools.  After that they are no longer responsible to you.

If you qualify to be one of our clients, because we have the trust from the schools, we will take care of you as well or better than any other company in the business.  We started Dragonfly to try to do our part in making your experience in Korea an especially positive one.  We will do whatever we can to insure that you will be placed in a quality position and we will also do what we can to insure that your experience in Korea will be a rewarding one.  We work directly with the schools and will contact you each month to see how you are doing.  You will always have access to us.

To that end, you understand that we cannot accept everyone who simply wants to teach English in Korea as one of our clients.  We have to establish a bond of trust between our teacher clients (you) and our schools.  We have two clients you and the schools where you will be teaching.  As mentioned, we place our teachers directly and not through a broker in Korea.  We take a personal interest in both you - the teacher - and the schools where you will work.  We must protect each of you.  If the schools we work with are to provide our clients excellent teaching positions and quality experiences while working there, then we have an obligation to protect the schools we work with as much as we protect you.  Both you - the teacher - and the schools we work with are our clients.  You would not want it any other way.

Join us as we work to improve the quality of service to the teachers of English in Korea.  We look forward to receiving your application.
