So it was that Gangjin produced magnificent translucent chungja of both graceful and whimsical form.
The black clay body originally has a special quality. Not only is is plastic and can be controlled well during the forming process but it also contains a precise amount of iron which when combined with Gangjin’s chungja glaze and the right amount of reduction produces the beautiful color we know as celadon. Very few cracks appear on the surface of Gangjin celadon either historic or contemporary. Other areas producing celadon have a cracked glaze surface. For commercial reasons, they attempt to praise this surface with the term “cracked ice” celadon primarily because their attempts at solving this glaze flaw have been unsuccessful.
