Gangjin Exhibit

         International Ceramic Artist

         Exhibit, Workshop and Tour

         Gangjin, Korea  August 7-20, 2010

Gangjin will invite up to twenty international ceramic artists to participate in an exhibit and a series of ceramic artist workshops and optional tour.  The invitations will come after reviewing applications for these events.

The workshops are presented by some of Korea’s most respected artists from several ceramic disciplines.

They are not only celadon workshops but a true immersion into Korean ceramics processes.  Among the outstanding presenters is Lee Hak Soo considered one of Korea’s Human Cultural Treasures in onggi.

Following the workshops invited artists will participate in a partially subsidized tour throughout Korea visiting ancient ceramic villages and other exceptional ceramic artists.

Gangjin is home of what is considered “the finest celadon under heaven”.  They have enjoyed this reputation for a thousand years.  To learn more about Gangjin and its history please visit our Gangjin Celadon website.

Each year Gangjin holds a remarkable festival celebrating ceramics.  For the last several years they have hosted ceramic artists as part of an international exhibit.  Acceptance into the Gangjin International Ceramic Artist’s Exhibit is competitive.  Accepted ceramic artists will also participate in an extensive workshop, conducted during the festival, by a series of outstanding Korean artists.  The workshop presenters are all highly respected artists and represent a number of important ceramic areas.   The presenters have represented nearly every type of ceramics produced in Korea.   Previous exhibitors and workshop participants have raved about them and the hospitality provided by the people of Gangjin.

All expenses during the festival will be paid by Gangjin.  This includes transportation to Gangjin from the Seoul airport, room, board and transportation as well as the free workshops while in Gangjin.  Artists are responsible for their own airfare from their home country to and from Seoul.

To make the event even more interesting and worthwhile for those selected, Gangjin and Morning Earth Tours are partially subsidizing a significant ceramics tour of Korea after the workshop at the Gangjin Celadon Festival.  The artists will travel from Gangjin around much of Korea visiting important ceramic artists, museums and other important points of interest.  You will personally meet many of Korea’s more important ceramic artists in their studios.  This will be a great ceramic tour at a greatly subsidized price.  We hope that all of the artists choose to also participate in the tour.

To apply for the possibility of being included in these extraordinary events, please follow the application process.

Thank You for Your Interest

NOTE:  Are you a serious about ceramics?  Can you “get away” for a couple of weeks or even a year?

We are looking for the right person who wishes to study ceramics in Korea.  The year 2010 would be an amazing year to be there.  It is the year of the first Onggi Exposition.  There are also the Mungyeong Tea Bowl Festival, the Gangjin Celadon Festival with its juried international event and many more ceramic events taking place throughout Korea.  You might as well live there in 2010.  We wish we could.  More and more serious ceramic artists are studying in Korea.

One of last year’s Gangjin exhibit and tour members studied in Korea for two weeks with a famous ceramic carver.  Another exhibit participant studied onggi for 6 months.  Are you ready?  Contact us and we may be able to help you.

NOTE:  The Gangjin Celadon Festival  is August 7-15, 2010.  The exhibit will take place during that time.  The workshop begins when the festival begins and will last from 5 to 7 days after which the ceramic artist’s tour will begin.

The tour will last 7 or 8 days and is highly subsidized but we cannot know the actual cost until later and the cost will depend on how many plan to join the tour.  In addition if there is sufficient interest the tour could also extend to China, for four more days, to visit Shanghai and some YiXing teapot artists.  We also have contacts there.

NOTE:  If accepted for participation in these events, you will leave for Korea on either August 4 or August 5 to arrive at the Seoul/Incheon (ICN) airport August 5.  (Some of you pass the international-date-line so leave early.)

Gangjin representatives will transport you to Gangjin on Aug 6.  The festival exhibit opens Aug. 7.

Registering will keep you informed as details are decided.  You must register to receive an official exhibit application.

Thanks for your response.
