Red Shino Cup

Ka T 618

This small single red cup is a very unusual piece.   Most of my cups are made in groups or sets while this cup is a single entity.  A cup for infused tea or wine, it is small and personal.   It should be used for private moments of contemplation.

Thrown on a slow wheel using what I call “tiger clay” it moves in its stillness.  This cup fits the hand and touches the eye.

The red shino coloring comes from  the use of iron following an ancient Japanese teabowl master’s tradition.  It was glazed, using personal glazing techniques, with a classic shino glaze.
