Red Shino
Ka T 618
This small red teabowl is very unusual. It is humble, unpretentious and natural - a true servant. These qualities are unusual in a red shino bow particularly one that also has luster undertones. The bowl is small and personal. It was fired in wood, the ash from which dusted the interior of the bowl causing it to develop a dark red interior against which macha stands out. The subtle luster surface caused by wood reduction is complemented by irregular areas. It is perfect for private tea.
Thrown on a slow wheel, it moves in its stillness. This bowl is particularly comfortable to hold.
The unusual coloring comes from the use of iron following an ancient Japanese teabowl master’s tradition. It was glazed, using personal glazing techniques, with a classic shino glaze fired with wood.
