Red Luster Shino
Ia T 630
This red luster teabowl is one of my favorite bowls. It is a classic in size, shape and feel according to Korean and Japanese standards. It is not just warm, it is hot like the flame in a natural fireplace. The unusual luster surface caused by wood reduction is complemented by the natural ash deposits on the surface. It is perfect for a special tea, and is truly one of a kind.
Thrown on a moderate wheel, it is steady and strong. Its color complements the macha beautifully. This bowl is particularly comfortable to hold.
The unusual coloring comes from the use of iron following an ancient Japanese teabowl master’s tradition. It was glazed, using personal glazing techniques, with a classic shino glaze fired with wood.
