Yellow Ash Salt Fired

Ea T 399

This yellow ash teabowl reminds me of a stone dug from an ancient quarry.

Thrown on a slow wheel, it moves in its stillness.  Subtle in color, it does not overpower the tea.  The bowl follows a combination of both Korean and Japanese teabowl aesthetic principals.  It both fits the hand and pleases the eye.  It was old when it was born.

During an international teabowl exhibition, this teabowl gained the attention of many Korean and Japanese teabowl connoisseurs.

The bowl incorporates natural clay and the ancient Hagi,  Karatsu and Shigaraki traditions of including impure feldspathic stone in the clay body.  These account for the unusual markings and surface.  The color comes from the use of a classic yellow ash glaze fired in a wood fired salt kiln.  This is a very rare piece.
