Gold Shino Wood Fired
Da T 563
This teabowl is my favorite gold bowl. Its presence and demeanor reminds me of a crown of gold used by ancient Silla Dynasty kings. It has the warmth of a new sunrise touching Korean mountains in autumn. Its ash and flame formed crystalline formations make this bowl truly one of a kind.
During an international tea bowl exhibition, this bowl gained particular praise from ceramic artists from China, Taiwan and other Asian connoisseurs.
Thrown on a fast wheel, it is steady and strong. This bowl has presence. High footed, it should be held with both hands as if in ceremony.
The exceptional coloring and surface comes from being fired with wood in a cooler section of the large shenogama with a classic shino glaze. The shenogama is America’s largest anagama type wood kiln. It was built principally by Ken Shenstone, thus my name for it.
Koreans might refer to the shenogama as a modified yonggama.
