Red Shino Crawled

This small red teabowl is also one of my favorite bowls. Its surface is similar to alligator leather but with the warmth of red coals on a rapidly dying wood fire. Although quite small, it has a large presence in the hand and to the eye. For me its size, appearance and feel are perfect for private tea on those days when one needs to be warm, comfortable and relaxed. The bowl is personal and absorbs the moment. It is truly one of a kind. Thrown on a slow wheel, it moves in its stillness. Its color complements macha or infused teas.
With its very flat wide foot, this bowl is particularly comfortable to hold.
The unusual coloring comes from the use of iron following an old Japanese teabowl master’s tradition. It was glazed with a classic shino glaze using personal application processes and fired in a gas flame.
