Contributed by Sam Clark of California, this .pdf presents three kinds of images pertinent to land owned by Sam’s relative, Gul Christopherson Rud: 1) the original patent issued by the Government Land Office, 2) a drawing of the land parcel based on its legal description, and 3) the property as it appeared on a plat map.
Researchers should not overlook the many Norwegian-language publications produced in the U.S. as sources of genealogical information. Emigrant families often subscribed to, or perhaps borrowed to read, newspapers and other printed items utilizing their native tongue and available by mail in their adopted country. Readers frequently submitted articles, and many obituaries were published which might not have appeared in any English-language paper.

The Thor M. Andersen Bibliography (TMA - Norway in America) is an extensive searchable online database of articles appearing in U.S. publications, hosted by the National Library of Norway. Visit the English version at http://www.nb.no/baser/tma/english.html.

The Rowberg File of obituaries and other newspaper items housed at the Norwegian-American Historical Association (NAHA) in Northfield, MN is a major collection of clippings from a variety of publications. It is also viewable as a set of microfiche (accessible at North Dakota State University and the Minnesota Genealogical Society library in South Saint Paul, MN.)

Since there seem to be no complete and ideal indexes of the content of all Norwegian-language publications, one must be creative in devising ways to discover content in them. A sense of what publications existed, their intended audiences, which locations of the country they were printed within and their dates of publication, will suggest both the possibilities and the limitations of their use as resources.

NAHA’s PDF file, Guide to Manuscript Collections, can be browsed online or downloaded
http://www.naha.stolaf.edu/archives/guide.htm. It contains numerous references to Norwegian-language newspaper articles. (Try, for example, a search of this PDF with the term “Decorah-Posten.”)

Many scholarly books and articles contain footnotes and bibliographic references to content in the Norwegian-language press. Some fulltext versions online at Google Books, for instance, can be searched (again, using the titles of publications as search terms). Though this type of reverse searching may be time-consuming and often unfruitful, I have found it can occasionally deliver surprising treasures. The same is true for regular web searches (on Google, Yahoo, etc.) using the titles of Norwegian-language publications as search terms).

( I am searching for more finding aids and indexes to the content of these Norwegian-language publications. Check back here for further information about indexes and related resources.)

Microfilmed newspapers can vary a great deal in readability. Old printing presses produced some dark and splotchy texts, often set in Gothic type faces. Legibility was often not enhanced by primitive microfilming technology. These factors can mean searches through microfilmed pages that will test one’s patience. This kind of resource is not recommended for early investigations, but to be used when dates and other clues are fairly well-established through prior research.

This list (see below), adapted from both Carlton Qualey’s Norwegian Settlement in the United States (1938), and Odd Lovoll’s A Folk Epic: The Bygdelag in America (1975), is useful, but may not be complete or up-to-date.

Another way to locate Norwegian-language newspapers is to utilize this new database at NAHA: http://fusion.stolaf.edu/naha/index.cfm?fuseaction=newspaper

The Minnesota Historical Society also has the AskRon Newspaper Database containing its holdings, which include some in Norwegian:
http://collections.mnhs.org/newspapers/arsearch.html

Here, too, is a list of Norwegian-language publications in the Luther College Archives and Preus Library, Decorah, Iowa (see pp 48-61):
http://archives.luther.edu/norwegiancollectionguide.pdf

__________

(The list below will be checked further for accuracy.)

NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS (including church and other types) -- and where to find collections.

abbreviations:

AC = Augsburg College, Mpls
LLC = Library of Luther College, Decorah, IA
LTS = Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul
MHS = Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul
WHS = State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Madison
NAHA = Norwegian-American Historical Association Archives, Northfield, MN
UND = University of North Dakota Library, Grand Forks.

Afholds basunen (Hillsboro, N.
Both the Dodge County Historical Society in Mantorville, MN and the History Center of Olmsted County (in Rochester) have quite complete collections of microfilmed newspapers for their respective counties. DCHS has a good collection of obituaries linked to its county’s cemeteries as well as other other clippings.

If you live in the U.S., you might likely be able to borrow many of the newspapers listed below on microfilm by way of interlibrary loan through your local library and the Minnesota Historical Society. A database called AskRon at MHS identifies which papers the society has on microfilm: http://collections.mnhs.org/newspapers/arsearch.html
Information about interlibrary loans from MHS is here:
http://www.mnhs.org/library/about/loan.html

The History Center of Olmsted County has some very useful searchable online databases that index newspaper articles published in that county’s newspapers at
http://www.olmstedhistory.info/apps/index.htm.
See the “Newspaper Index” (a WPA project covering items from years 1859-1912), the “Biographical Index” and “Subject Index,” as well as two indexes of material from the past three decades provided by the Rochester Public Library.

Two commercial genealogical services, Footnote.com and World Vital Records, have digitized online content drawn from both the Dodge County Republican and the Dodge County Independent newspapers.

Dodge County newspapers

Claremont Cosmopolitan, weekly, 25 Nov 1880 - 9 June 1881*

Claremont Leader

Claremont News, weekly, 24 Mar , 1922 - present

Dodge Center Dodge County Record, weekly, 10 Apr 1885 - 14 Feb 1907*

Dodge Center Dodge County Star, weekly, 20 Apr 1895;
