I ran for the dolphins today. It was a good cause. Kudos to Condura for hosting this event.

I learned a few things today.

Just because my last 5 kilometer race started late doesn’t mean that my next 5 kilometer race won’t start on time.

I drove to the race venue with my wife. She had to park the car while I rushed to the starting line. I didn’t even get to check in prior to the race.

I ran today without the benefit of doing any warm up or proper stretching. The back of my right calf cramped as I was a kilometer into my run.

My daughters had to attend their respective ballet and taekwondo classes this morning. My wife and I were apprehensive that we wouldn’t have enough time after the race to make it back to our residence in Antipolo City, Rizal.

I joked her that I would try to run faster to allow us to get home sooner.

She reminded me to just have fun.

I managed a personal best today of 27 minutes and 12 seconds for a 5 kilometer run.

You may click HERE to view the rest of the images from the race.
How It Fits (Being Stuck In Limbo)

There was a time that I couldn't purchase pants off the rack at any of the boutiques or stores at the mall. That was one of the pitfalls of my having been too short for my weight. My height is five foot five and a half inches. I used to weigh 240 pounds.

I could only purchase pants before in Greenhills. That was the only place in Metro Manila that sold pants with a waistline of 44 inches. I remember during one birthday party that my brother-in-law, John Flores, was about to greet me but he suddenly stopped himself.

I asked him what he was going to tell me.

He said that he was going to greet me "Happy Birthday and may you more birthdays to come. May your waistline never exceed your age."

(We had a good laugh over this adage.)

It was impractical for me to grow taller to match my weight. Neither did I want to age by at least a decade overnight.

Shedding weight has been a long process for me. My waistline is finally lower than my age.

I've been enjoying going to mall and shopping for clothes. The standard line I used to hear from sales persons was that they only stocked pants with a waistline size up to 38 inches.

"Hanggang 38 lang po ang sizes namin. Sukatin ninyo pa rin po. Baka magkasya."

I used to think that my waist appeared smaller than it really was. Or, they were just desperate to meet their sales quota.

I can now purchase pants off the rack. They fit me more or less. I can now be picky of how my pants fit me. The usual problem I encounter is that it’s too loose around the waistline and just right at the hips. Or, the waistline is a good fit but the area around the hips and thighs is too tight.

But it has been a fun process of finding pants with the perfect fit.

Celio* and Springfield used to be an exercise in frustration when I would purchase pants from them. I had finally gotten my waistline down to 34 inches. Both shops follow UK sizing and just convert it to American sizing. They would have the equivalent sizes for 33 and 35. But 34 was a limbo size as far as those two shops were concerned. They would tell me that the style of pants I wanted wasn't produced or stocked in the equivalent size of 34.

I managed to shed a bit more of weight after the Christmas holidays. I'm no longer stuck in limbo since I now fit in a size 33. This was something that I discovered last night at Celio*.

One funny thing is that I have a pair of pants that fit me perfectly. They fit is just right where it was to be right. The fit is loose enough where it has to be loose. They fit that perfectly. I never bought these pants. I never even got to fit them prior to getting them.

I had a shoot for Canadian Club jeans. My client asked me for my waistline a day before the shoot. He showed up the following day and gave me a pair of Canadian Club jeans when the shoot had wrapped up.

Those jeans are now my favorite pair. I think it's ironic that the pair of pants I never got to try on is those that fit me the best.
I was at Trinoma Mall today to do a quick personal errand. I decided to pass by the adidas original store at the 2nd floor before heading back home. They were featuring the adidas Star Wars collection which was launched a couple of weeks ago. I did buy an adidas/Star Wars hoody the day after the official launch. The sales person told me after I made the purchase that I would be entitled to a free sheet of adidas/Star Wars stickers.

There were bobble heads of Darth Vader and a Storm Trooper on display. But you could only get those if you purchased at the same time an adidas/Star Wars pair of shoes and apparel at the same time.

They had adidas Superstar II shoes for sale. I inquired about their children’s shoes since I wanted to get a pair for my 5-year old son. They had an adidas Superstar II Darth Vader shoes in stock in my son’s shoe size.

I brought up the topic of the bobble head. I asked if I could finally get a bobble head. I reasoned that I had purchased an adidas/Star Wars hoody two weeks ago and I was purchasing a pair of shoes today. I was politely told that the purchase of both items had to be on a single receipt.

It was a bit of a disappointment because I wanted my son to have a Darth Vader bobble head to match his new shoes. I paid for the shoes and accepted the free sheet of stickers. I was pretty sure my son would also be happy with the set of stickers.

There was another customer in the shop who was purchasing an adidas/Star Wars hoody. He also inquired about the bobble head. He was told that he could get one if he purchased a pair of adidas/Star War shoes to go with the adidas/Star Wars hoody that he was purchasing.

I asked him if he were willing to add my purchase to mine just for the bobble head. I would be willing to pay him or barter my sticker set just to get the bobble head.

I mentioned that I wanted the bobble head for my son. He said that he had noticed me checking out the children’s shoes. He agreed to my proposition.

The sales persons at adidas originals Trinoma said that it wasn’t possible because both items had to be on a single receipt. The other guy objected and said that it should be possible since my purchase of the shoes was less than five minutes ago. He was insistent that there might be something that the sales personnel could do.

One of the sales personnel made a phone call and a store supervisor showed up. The situation was explained to him. He instructed the staff to void my transaction. He would personally sign the paper work. My purchase was then added to the purchase other guy’s purchase. He declined any form of compensation for the bobble head because it was meant for my son.

He did jokingly bring up the topic of our getting together again in the future for another purchase. He could purchase another hoody and I would purchase another pair of shoes. But the bobble head from that future purchase would go to him.

The other guy’s name is Ryan Fernandez. We have exchanged phone numbers. I told him that I was grateful for his generosity. I would be willing to meet up with him when the next wave of adidas/Star Wars collection gets released. I told him that I was serious about helping him get a bobble head for his next purchase.

I am grateful to have experienced generosity from a total stranger.

My son was very happy when I gave him his new pair of shoes and matching bobble head.

His smile is my reminder that I have a favor to repay to Ryan.

I joined my first official 5km race yesterday at McKinley Hill, Taguig City. It was for the benefit of the Haribon Foundation. I’ve blogged in the past about a shirt and a pair of running shoes that my elder brother gave to me. I decided to wear them for this race as my good luck charm.

My elder brother used to be part of the Ateneo High School Track & Field Team. He used to win very often. He graduated from High School holding the record for three UAAP track events. I figured that I would be okay if I could channel some of his running mojo with the shirt and shoes that he gave to me.

I was pre-registered and had my race number a week prior to the event. But I had to go back to the registration center two days before the race to pick up my singlet. The staff at the McKinley Hill Information Center was very courteous and accommodating. The even showed me the race route using the big diorama they had at their showroom. I mentioned to one of the information center’s staff that the route didn’t look that difficult. She told me that the hardest part of the route would be its uphill portion.

There was a slight glitch was the starting time of the race. I asked information center staff if the stated time of 5am was the assembly time or the time the race would start. They told me that the race would begin at 5am.

We left our residence at Antipolo around 345am. We arrived at McKinley Hill at 430am. The race officially began at past 6am.

Some things just don’t go according to plan. I think that I was such a noob that I actually believed that race would start promptly at 5am. I’ll know better the next time.

I looked around me prior to the race and saw that the other runners were stretching and warming up. I saw one race participant consuming what looked like a power gel for pre-race nutrition. That made me think of how good it would be to have breakfast right after the race.

There were a lot of people around me at the starting line. That was something new for me since I usually run solo at my pace. I either run along the main road of Valley Golf in Antipolo City or at Summit Wellness Center at Tektite Building, Ortigas Center.

My wife accompanied me for this fun run. She reminded me that I was there to have fun and not to race. I remembered what she told me as we were leaving the starting line. I tried to keep pace with the other runners. I’m used to weaving while running to avoid potholes. The main road of Valley Golf isn’t that smooth and is undergoing reconstruction and repair. There are potholes along the main road from where the road has deteriorated and has been torn up to be repaired.

Weaving while running to get past some of the runners is something new to me.

I passed some of the other runners.

I got passed by some of the other runners.

This was the first time I have run outside of my regular route.

This was the first time I have run outside of my subdivision!

I couldn’t help but think during the race that this would be the portion of my regular route that would have an uphill climb. My body was anticipating an uphill climb of my regular route. But I was still at the flat portion of the race route.

The uphill portion of the race route wasn’t that hard. I only realized it as I was sprinting towards the finish line. McKinley Hill is flat compared to my everyday running route. I know its sounds boastful. But my regular route has a climbs that are steeper and longer than McKinley Hill. I feel that I should have signed up for the 10km route instead. But hindsight is always 20/20. I wanted to play it safe. I wasn’t to assure myself that I would finish my first race without walking. My wife also told me that I was there to have fun.

I still don’t know what my official time is for this race. I forgot to take note of the race clock as I was crossing the finish line. I’ll probably have to contact the McKinley Hill Information Center and ask how I can get my official running time.

I’ve signed up for another race a few weeks from now. I’ll still be running 5km for this next race.

I’ll still be running in my brother’s shirt and shoes.

You can click HERE to see the other photos from the race.

They will be issued to my basic photography students who will be having their last seminar session on Sunday.

All students of succeeding batches will receive their respective cards during the last session of their seminar schedule.

How can my basic photography students of past batches avail of the card?

It's simple. Please send an email to pinakamagalingko@gmail.com

Please indicate in your email the following:

a) How you wish your name to appear on the card
b) The month and year that you took my basic photography seminar.
c) Please indicate if you were a part of the weeknight, Saturday or special sessions.

(Please refer to your certificate of attendance.)

Also, for my peace of mind, please include a scanned copy of your certificate in your email. Or a web cam shot of you holding your certificate will suffice. I just need this for verification purposes.

The cards will be released within the month. I will announce the details of the date, time and venue of where the cards will be released (it's EB time again :D).

There is a cut off date if you wish to get your card within the month. I must receive an email from you with all the necessary info before or by January 22, 2010.

The cards will be released in batches on a monthly basis for my former basic photography students. Please watch out for announcements regarding the cut off date for each batch release.

By the way, Jayson So has been kind enough to offer something to those who will be using this card. Jayson So operates the Tokyo Tokyo branch inside UST (that's the only Tokyo Tokyo branch where this freebie offer will be valid). Buy any rice meal at the UST Tokyo Tokyo branch and flash the card. You will then be entitled to a freebie (i.e. Iced Tea, Cali Maki, etc.). The monthly freebie offer from the UST Tokyo Tokyo branch will vary with each month.

Adam Alix has agreed to give a P20.00 discount to those who have the card and will purchase from him his photography themed sticker.

Check out Adam’s sticker here.

Frank Tsai of Aperture Trading has also informed me that the card will entitle the bearer to an additional 3% discount for cash purchases on top of the standard discount.

Guys, send me an email ASAP! :D
My family and I got together yesterday with my parents, my elder brother and his wife. It’s a tradition in my family for us to get together to have lunch at the start of each New Year. I think this annual reunion was my dad’s idea. I can recall a past New Year’s celebration when my dad told all of us that he would want all of us to be together for a meal every New Year. My brothers, sister and I were all still single and studying. We all agreed.

We’ve been missing my younger brother and sister the past few years during our lunch gathering since they now both reside abroad.

My elder brother, Sam, gave me a shirt from New Balance a couple of months ago. He said that he didn’t like the fit and asked if I could use it. I wasn’t going to turn down a free shirt. I’ve been occasionally using the shirt when I go running.

Yesterday, my elder brother asked me what was my shoe size and if I wanted a pair of running shoes. I’ve pretty much worn out my two pairs of running shoes. Their outsoles are still intact. But the midsoles seem to have lost their cushioning.

I’ve been running using a Nike Equalon3 and a Nike Span5. The Nike Span5 is older by at least four months compared to my Nike Equalon3. But I still can’t figure out why it was the Nike Equalon3 that first lost its cushioning.

Sam said that he had purchase a pair of Adidas Supernova Sequence running shoes. He said that they felt good when he fit them at the shop. But he didn’t like how they felt on his feet once he began running. He hardly used them and bought a different pair of shoes to replace them.

We both share the same shoe size. I wasn’t going to turn down a free pair of running shoes.

I ran 6 kilometers today wearing my elder brother’s shirt and shoes.

Thanks kuya :D

I did a short run late in the afternoon before ushering in the new year. I did have plans of doing another run this morning. But I thought that it would be wiser to wait. I can still hear some firecrackers outside. It seems that some of my neighbors didn’t use up all of their firecrackers last night.

I don’t want to run and have to watch out for exploding or unexploded firecrackers along my route.

I’ll do my first run for the new year late in the afternoon.

Happy New Year!

It's located at the basement level near one of the escalators.

I visited him yesterday to buy a few hotdogs.

I even brought some home to share with my family. My second daughter Max told me that she liked the hotdogs. In fact, she even asked if I could stop buying her regular brand (Purefoods) and start buying Swift hotdogs instead. She said that she found Swifts tastier.

Guys, please help my friend Mike with his latest business venture. Pass by his hotdog stand at Ever Gotesco Mall if you're in the area and buy a few hotdogs.

I know that some of us like to occasionally joke "Pa-canton ka naman diyan."

I can't think of an equivalent quip for hotdogs with the same humor.

I'm open to suggestions. Anyone who can think of an equivalent joke for hotdogs gets a free jumbo hotdog sandwich on me. You can claim it from Mike at his hotdog stand.

(Mike, you can charge me for the hotdog the next time we see each other :D)
Actually, there were a couple of guys who also attended but lived outside of Rizal province. Ergo, the name of our group had to be temporarily changed to DSLR (Dinadayo na Samahang Lasenggero ng Rizal) just for last night.

A couple showed up with their puppy. It was a beautiful female beagle named Nala. We're all familiar with the saying you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I tried last night to teach a new dog new tricks.

I picked up the puppy and started whispering into its ear "Ca-a-a-a-a-a-n-o-o-o-o-o-on. Use a Ca-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-n--o-o-o-o-o-o-on DSLR." But I figured that the puppy would best benefit if I also taught it a few work flow techniques using Adobe Photoshop.

I then gave the puppy a mini-lecture on my favorite Photoshop techniques.

"Layer. New Adjustment Layer. Curves. Set blend mode to ..."

"Duplicate layer. Filter. Other. High Pass. Adjust radius setting. Set layer blend mode to overlay. Adjust blend if options to ..."

"Make color cast neutral. Adjust temperature slider. Adjust tint slider. Press ..."

"Lasso tool. Select eyes. Duplicate layer. Set blend mode of duplicate layer to ..."

"View. Proof Setup. Custom ..."

"Set RGB values to ..."

The puppy fell asleep shortly afterwards. I think it experienced info overload.

However, I think its safe to say that the puppy now knows more about how to use Adobe Photoshop compared to its owner.

Vic Manlapaz from Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, Inc. posted something on the web that caught my eye. They were offering shoe bags and beach bags that were all made and recycled from the printed tarps that Coke uses to advertise its products.

http://vicmanlapaz.multiply.com/journal/item/439/The_Coca-Cola_Little_Red_Schoolbag_Project_

I sent an email to Vic (victor.manlapaz@ccbp.com.ph) and inquired about the bags. He was honest enough to tell me that he couldn't guarantee regarding the final look of the bags. The tarp gets cut up and sewn together. But you're not guaranteed which printed part of the tarp will appear on the bag.

Vic sent me via email sample images of the bags. I told Vic that I was willing to order three shoe bags. But I had a small request. One of the sample images he sent me had a beach bag in a hideous shade of green. I said that I would be happy with any part of the tarp. But I didn't want that shade of green to be on any of my bags.

I paid Vic P680.00 for three shoe bags. Each bag costs P200 each. I had to pay an additional P80 for shipping. The payment was made via bank deposit. I emailed to Vic a scanned copy of the bank deposit slip. My bags arrived the following day as promised.

What can I say? They're great looking bags. You're also guaranteed that each bag you receive will be unique (because you don't know which part of the printed tarp will make it to your bag :D).

How big are the bags?

I got some of my Nike basketball hightops to check the fit of the bag. No problem. I didn't even have to squeeze the shoes together to close the bag's zipper.

Most of my former basic photography students should know the signifance of Coke to my photography seminars :D

Please click HERE to see detail shots of the shoe bags.

I often receive requests from other photographers to critique their work. I don’t always agree to such requests due to various reasons.

First of all, I don’t want to critique all of the images in a photographer’s online web gallery. That’s too tedious and impractical. I would rather critique one or two images that a photographer feels is his or her current best work to date.

Please don’t ask me to choose which photo to critique among the many that you have posted in your online gallery. It isn’t my place to choose which are your best shots. It’s your job as a photographer to know which of your shots is your best.

Secondly, I’m being asked to comment and critique a photo. This is sometimes referred to as C&C. This isn’t the same thing as asking for praise. I always try to give an honest assessment. I will praise a photo if I think its good. But I won’t pull any punches if I think the photo is bad.

A request for C&C is not an opportunity for a photographer to defend the perceived shortcomings of his or her images. I don’t care what title you have affixed to the image. We’re photographers. We should be able to produce a shot that will convey the message to our viewer EVEN if they don’t know what titles we have assigned to our images. Titles should only serve to help be better appreciate the message of a photo. Titles should never be the where you try to convey the message of a photo.

Don’t ask me to do a C&C when you will reply with a litany of reasons why you got the shot wrong.

I don’t care what difficulties you encountered while shooting the image.

Viewers don’t take that into account when they form an opinion of why they don’t like your photos. They won’t care if your gear malfunctioned or if the lighting situation wasn’t working in your favor. They don’t care if you couldn’t get a good shot of a model because of (insert usual reasons here).

It isn’t a personal attack if someone doesn’t like your photos. You’ll either have to accept the fact that you can’t please everyone or you need to improve your craft.
We made all of the necessary reservations and bookings. However, we had to phone in our cancellations yesterday due to the typhoon.

My kids were a bit disappointed. They were looking to being with their lolo on his birthday. They were also psyched up for participating in the trick or treat that was being hosted by Podium Mall.

Thankfully, the weather cleared up quickly. I brought my kids to Podium and spent the day with them. I chaperoned them from shop to shop as they went soliciting for treats.

My eldest daughter chose to dress up in flapper fashion from the 1920's. My second daughter dressed up in a hula outfit and toted a stuffed toy of Stitch. My son was a bit uncooperative. I wanted him to wear a costume of a plain t-shirt, jeans and rubber shoes. He chose to go trick or treating without any costume.

Thankfully, everyone else at the mall thought he was wearing a costume :D

LOL!

Please click HERE to view the other photos from my Halloween 2009 set.

I used to have a mini dachshund that I named Bruno. I really loved that dog. He was playful and he was great with the kids. I even drew a portrait of Bruno. Sadly, this is the only image I have left to remember Bruno.

It was late at night upon coming from home a lecture that I got the bad news. Bruno had managed to slip out of the house. Our maids didn't bother to do an extensive search for him since it was dark and raining. I went out of the house and tried to search for him as best as I could. I sometimes still wonder where Bruno is now. I hope that someone found him and has taken good care of him.

Bruno has even attended one of my photography lectures. I brought him once to attend one of my photography seminar lectures at the Ateneo de Manila Communication Department.

A co-faculty, Sev Sarmenta, saw me walking around the corridors of the department with Bruno on a leash. Sev asked me the name of my dog. I said that my dog was called Bruno.

Sev paused momentarily and said that it was such a big name for such a small dog.

I told Sev that we all strive for greatness even if it’s just only in name.

We now have a new dog. One of my wife's friends gave us a dachshund that I have named Brunhilda.

We call her Bru for short.

I don't think that Bru will get lost like Bruno. The first thing Bru wants to do when we take her out for a walk is to run back into the house.

I look forward to the day that I can have Bru attend one of my photography lectures at the Ateneo de Manila.
