I have been playing the guitar and blues harmonica for over forty years now but in 1987 I suffered a life threatening illness during which I lost all coordination, and of course my guitar playing was seriously affected. It took me three years to get back to a normal life and I still have moments when my coordination wavers. I tried to return to guitar playing but could not remember anything, I would hold the guitar but had no clue what to do with it so eventually gave up trying. A few years later someone told about a local folk club at the Six Bells pub in Chiddingly and I started going on a regular basis, after watching the various musicians for some time I would think, I used to play that song, I remember that chord sequence, I used to fingerpick that song, this was just the encouragement I needed and I learnt to play the guitar for a second time. It took me a long time to pluck up the courage to play in public but about two years ago, out of the blue I asked Liz Harman if I could borrow her guitar and stood up and  played and have been playing on a regular basis ever since. For the last year I have been playing at the White Horse Folk club in Bodle Street Green as well.

If you are a bedroom guitarist or fed up playing for family and friends and would like to get out there and take the next step, meet other musicians and broaden your listening and playing horizons then its time to go to your local folk club or open mike night and do it, don’t let the folk word put you off as both the Six Bells and the White Horse encourage all sorts of music. Worried about forgetting the words, getting the chords wrong, guitar going out of tune or not singing very well, don’t be, it happens to everyone, we all have done, and still do make mistakes (especially me), the thing is no one is going to care or worry about it, just smile, laugh, sigh or swear then carry on, and remember that if people laugh, their laughing with you , not at you, their remembering the last time it happened to them.

Catfish Blues - Robert Petway

Have taken some videos of various people playing at the Six Bells along with some photos and added them to the Six Bells page. Hopefully more will be added over time.

Have recently added videos and photos to the White Horse page as well and hope to be adding to them as and when.
