On the 20th May, 2002, East Timor (Timor Leste) was declared an independent nation.

Oecusse is an enclave surrounded by West Timor (Indonesia) that is more than a day’s travel by ferry from the rest of East Timor.

Who are the Manly Friends of Oecusse?

In August 2008 Manly Council entered into a formal Friendship Agreement with the district of Oecusse in Timor Leste, and since then interested members of the Manly-Warringah community have formed a support group to strengthen and maintain that friendship.

“What is remarkable is the courage, determination, resilience and patience of the Timorese people which can neither be taught nor learnt” Sergio Vieira de Mello, UNTAET, 2002.
