My Top 10 Picks for 2006
My Top 10 Picks for 2006
01. United 93. A mesmerizing and emotional retelling of the 9/11 tragedy. This masterpiece is an homage to the heroism exhibited.
02. Volver. Almodovar's wonderful tale about coming to grips with the past and family ties. Entrancing to say the very least.
03. An Inconvenient Truth. Call it a science lecture, or call it exaggerated propaganda. Al Gore's film is undeniably significant. Scary and powerful.
04.. Bubble. Soderbergh's homespun tale of smalltown murder. The film is stripped down to bare essentials in terms of plot and production, yet it is as hypnotic as anything I've ever seen.
05. Casino Royale. Never been a big Bond fan myself, but this installment revitalizes the series with high octane entertainment. All hail Daniel Craig.
06. The Departed. Scorsese's taut cop drama, with a gripping screenplay and a cast led by DiCaprio, Damon and Nicholson.
08. Monster House. Refreshingly darker than most of its animated counterparts, "Monster House" haunts us with eerie delight.
09. Little Miss Sunshine. The funniest film of the year. The Hoovers' wacky roadtrip is a joy to watch.
10. Curse of the Golden Flower. I have long yearned for Yimou to return to his earlier "quieter" films, but this cinematic epic of glorious Shakespeareanesque tragedy is simply amazing.
07. The Death of Mr. Lazarescu. At times comical, but very human to its core, the film follows an elderly Romanian man as he journeys through medical bureaucracy.
