‘Everyone has the right freely to participate

in the cultural life of the community…’

Welcome…

My work as a researcher, writer and consultant, and previously in community arts, rests on the conviction that everyone has the right to create art and to share the result.

Shaping your own cultural identity - and having it recognised by others - is central to human dignity and liberty. If people can’t represent themselves culturally, how can they do so politically? If people are only imagined and portrayed by others, how can they be equal, autonomous and active members of society?

And yet, everywhere, people’s access to culture is very unequal. Those who identify with dominant cultures have no problem creating and promoting their values. Others, without cultural resources, platforms and legitimacy, remain on the margins.

My work engages with those issues. This site describes my research, writing and consultancy work and gives access to many downloadable resources.
