A full dress sporran

This is a very ornate mink sporran with cross-chain detail.  The chain is heavier and the tassel-bells are finely decorated.  The cantle has three Celtic crosses which symbolise the sun and the tree of life.  The black leather provides a frame for the sporran.

Full dress sporrans should be worn with full dress kilt outfits to bring the whole look together.

A pouch sporran

This looks so authentic.  Pick up your war hammer and run into battle!

The buttersoft leather ages very nicely over time and the metal part has a concealed magnet to keep the flap down.    The coin pouch compliments this sporran well, perfect for your loose shrapnel.

A semi dress sporran

This is a nice and simple sporran with beautiful Celtic embossed motifs.  The front is made of black seal and is very glossy.

The chrome bells are a good finishing touch and make a pleasing sound when you run!

What is a sporran?

"Sporran" is the Gaelic word for a pouch or a purse. Now a decorative part of Highland dress, it was originally an everyday practical item. Made of leather or fur, it usually has more or less elaborate silver or other ornamentation.  It is worn on a chain or belt around the waist, allowing the sporran to lie below the waist of the person wearing a kilt.  Since most traditional kilts did not have pockets, like the ancient ‘great plaid’ (Gaelic Breacon an fhèilidh), formed of a long draped cloth which had a gap at the front, and in more modern times because the kilt is traditionally worn without undergarments.  Historically, the sporran was used to carry a day’s rations.  Some believe it serves as armour for the groin!

A day-wear sporran

This brown leather sporran is embossed with Celtic motifs and a clan crest.  It fastens with a popper button at it’s centre.  It has no tassels for a more streamlined appearance.

You can choose a crest of your own, please ask for details.
