New banjo buddies
Mark recently had the chance to visit with Dave & Nancy Hejna, and their daughter Maddy at their home while in the Grand Rapids, MI area. Dave took lessons with the great Fleming Brown while growing up in the Chicago area, and is teaching his daughter to play. The Hejnas are a musical family, and Maddy has a particular gift for the 5-string. During the two-hour session Maddy and Mark worked on Cripple Creek, Soldier’s Joy, drop-thumb techniques and arranging, Ruben You Can Play Your Banjo, drank a lot of coffee, laughed a lot and ate some donut holes. Folk Club @The Grafton
For just abut 6 years, Mark has been leading the folk jam and sing along at The Grafton Pub as an extension of Old School of Folk Music community outreach. On Tuesday, November 17, 2009, Mark and student musicians raised more than $650 for the Old Town School membership program. Folk Club - as a community - is now officially among the membership of the Old Town School. Every Step of the Way is number one at the Old Town School
MD’s Every Step of the Way has been chosen as one of the Old Town School of Folk Music’s songs of the session. OTS faculty member Skip Landt led the song at October 12’s Second Half gathering of students and faculty to a great response. As a result, Every Step will be one of the featured songs of study for the upcoming session beginning October 26. The chord chart, lyrics, tablature for guitar & mandolin, standard notation and an mp3 will all be made available for school-wide use at no charge. The Performing Art Workshop Oct. 25 @ 2pm
A new workshop for  those looking to participate in a discussion of effective performing skills and strategies. Mark Dvorak has been performing in all kinds of settings both solo and with ensemble for a very long while now. He will share his insight on the task of facing an audience with only one’s instrument and songs. As time permits, participants who choose to share a segment of their own performance will have an opportunity to do so in a supportive setting. Every Step of the Way 
at the legendary Willow Folk Festival
Chicago folk music veteran George Levison reports he performed Mark’s Every Step of the Way at Illinois’ legendary Willow Folk Festival near Stockton, Illinois on August 8, 2009. George has collected hundreds of songs over the years and 2009 marked his 39th year at Willow. “I first got into the folk scene in 1969 when I saw a great picker named Dwain Storey who inspired me to learn to play,” said George. “I took my first classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music in 1970 and one of my first teachers was Ted Johnson. I got to know all of the local performers at the time; Fred Holsteien, Eddie Holstein, Steve Goodman and many others.” The image to the right is George performing at the Willow Folk Festival in 2007. Folk Club @The Grafton
Folk Club @The Grafton is Mark’s twice monthly sing along and jam session held at The Grafton Pub, 2430 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago. Folk Club is open to the public and gathers many students and faculty from the Old Town School. On July 21, songwriter Andrew Calhoun dropped by to share a couple African-American spirituals from his most recent Waterbug release, Bound To Go. “The Spirituals were made for many voices,” said Andrew, “and it is a joy to sing them in company.” Thank you again Andrew for gracing our session. Never Turning Back
The very wonderful film, Never Turning Back, has won the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award in the spring 2009 competition. Mark is proud to have provided three pieces of music to the soundtrack of Never Turning Back. The Picture Man
Mark contributed two pieces of music to the independent film The Picture Man, a poignant portrait of 99 year-old photographer and poet Milton Rogovin. The Picture Man has been entered in several competitions and is available in DVD from www.miltonrogovin.com.
