How I started to improvise

This is an interesting story. I was tricked into it by conspiracy. I was on KPFA radio in Berkeley, CA, interviewed live by Charles Amirkhanian in 1991, regarding my written composition for violin and electronics. While I was on the air, Henry Kaiser, who was a friend of Charles and also a guitarist/world music producer, called in and asked him: "Does she improvise?". Charles, without asking me, replied: "Of course, she does". After the show while I was packing, Charles came up to me and said: "Ah... There is someone who wants to meet you". There he was, Henry Kaiser, who appeared in his Hawaiian shirt, short pants wearing blue sunglasses with a HUGE dog. I didn't know who he was, but he insisted that I come with him to his house in Oakland. There I was, not knowing what would happen following a stranger into his house. He said: "Let's go into the garage".... it was getting worse. It turned out he started to play great world music records for me one after another, and then said, "OK, let's play." He started to play his guitar; three minutes passed, five minutes passed and he didn't seem to stop. I thought, "Well, I might as well play too". We ended up playing together for three hours, and I came to discover that I could improvise naturally. The next year, Henry and I, together with guitarist Jim O'Rouke and saxophonist John Oswald, made a CD from Victo label, entitled ACOUSTICS.
