Ma‘ema‘e, clean and pure in the Hawaiian language, is situated in beautiful, historic Nu‘uanu Valley. Founded in the late 1800's, Ma‘ema‘e has grown from a simple three-building facility to its present design with seven buildings that accommodate nearly 745 students from kindergarten through the sixth grade.

Residents from all facets of the community support the school in many ways. The annual Family Fun Night and the Ma‘ema‘e School Community Council, are examples of people in the community coming together to create an environment that supports learning and growing for all.

Best Public Art: The Ceramic Mural at Ma‘ema‘e School

Over an eight-month period, resident Artist in the Schools, Catherine Iwami, created a collage from the sketches made by children, supervised the students' construction of about 200 clay slabs, and then fired them. The final mural, based on the Ma‘ema‘e School Song, was installed in time for Ma‘ema‘e's 1993 May Day celebration. (Honolulu Magazine, March 1995)
