April 29, 2009 6:00 pm in the LVTI Library

Donald S. Hussey – President

Present:

Donald Hussey, Beth Mercaldi, Paul Crowley, Ron Noel, Joe O’Hagan, Al Malagrifa, Mike Alukonis, Doug Kastonotis, Ralph Jaimeson, Kim Keighley

Old Business:

Minutes presented and reviewed. Motions to accept minutes.

Treasurer’s Report presented and reviewed. Motions to accept Treasurer’s Report.

LVTI Website link is on lynnschools.org (school profiles); our meeting dates are on it. We are looking for ideas for the alumni page. Website is still getting many hits, 8,404 from September through April.

Don Hussey has Dr.Coughlin’s photo “Hall of Fame Wall”. Hall of Fame wall needs to be updated, per Joe O’Hagan, the wall opposite the current photo area was going to become the Hall of Fame Wall with a slim glass case all the way across with quality wood. Mr. Randall said the Carpentry shop was going to build it to demonstrate the good skills of the students. LVTAA would pay for the building supplies. Nothing ever happened. Mal offered to speak with Mr. Randall to see if we can proceed.

New Business:

This year’s Graduation speaker will be Paul Crowley, a LVTI graduate, LVTAA Treasurer.

Mr. Ridley was told that Related are going to be taken out of the academic week, except for the licensing trades; Cosmetology, Electrical (now will be called “Electricity”) and Plumbing. There will be more elective classes offered including Spanish. The Superintendent will be re-structuring all the schools in the city.

5 shops to be closed; Painting & Decorating, Marketing Education, Machine Shop, CADD to close after this school year, Early Childhood to be phased out after the next two years to give the Sophomores and Juniors a chance to complete the course. DOE has not officially authorized CADD, Machine Shop and ECC yet.

In addition, the hall monitors, Cynthia Fountain-Health Tech’s therapeutic aide, Bob Beaton-Electronics and a Mr. Hussey’s Department Head position have been eliminated.

Most shop names have been changed which means that all teachers of those shops must re-apply for their jobs. Paul Crowley has heard that the changes being made are “good for the school as a whole”. Re-aligning things is a long-term plan that will be positive. Tech to become more like an Academy. A standard of entrance will be followed so we are not a dumping ground.

There is a DOE statute that says EVERY sending middle school must send all their students to see Lynn Tech and they did not. TV Media will be making 300 more DVDs to pass out to the remaining students who will be visiting Lynn Tech.

Membership drive for LVTAA, we need suggestions. Our website should be used to push people to join, put something on the home page. Also advertise for Hall of Fame nominations.

The next Hall of Fame banquet should be a year from now and can be incorporated with the first 10 year reunion. Nominees must have graduated at least 10 years ago. Start process in September, it takes a lot of work and time. Mr. Ridley, as our Director should be the Master of Ceremonies.

Colonel Philip J. Saulnier, LVTI Class of 1956 Leadership Award ($10,000 donated) $500.00 to be given out each year. Paul Crowley will contact Colonel Saulnier to see how he wants to distribute the $500.00.

When is Awards Night? We have to establish an awards committee to discuss distribution of all other awards, senior guidance counselor, Mr. Ridley Mr. Gallo, Ron Noel and Mike Alukonis did it last year.

OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE WEDNESDAY, MAY 13,2009 AT 6:00 PM and our last for the year  WILL BE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 2009 AT 6:00 PM

Meeting was adjourned at 6:55 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Beth A. Mercaldi
