Tour of Pacific Islands

Dad is from a little town in Northern Utah called Newton. He was sworn into the Army on April 21, 1941 as a communication specialist. He began in Fort Monmouth, NJ. for two months. Then went to Ft. Mead, Maryland., North Carolina for maneuvers and back to Ft. Mead. I understand he was at Treasure Island, near San Francisco, before leaving for the South Pacific.

(Dad had friend who was offered an honorable discharge on Saturday December 7, 1941. It was not given once news of Pearl Harbor arrived. It was a cold, miserable day. Fitting for the let down.)

Dad’s tour took him to the following areas in the South Pacific.

  1. 1.New Caledonia

  2. 2.New Hebrides (now Vanuatu)

  3. 3.Efate

  4. 4.Guadal Canal

  5. 5.Stirling Island

  6. 6.Near Biak

  7. 7.Morotai Island

  8. 8.Leyte, Phillipines

(Click the location links at the top of each page to see detailed images of each island)

Dad is now 90 years old. He’s still strong and healthy and recalls much of his experience.
