GYM DOGS ‘08

One of my favorite sporting events to both attend and shoot is gymnastics. This past semester I was able to shoot not only some home meets, which we know is always dramatic and over the top (because we are the best- well at least we think so), but I was also able to grab a pass to the NCAA meet that took place here in Athens. I ended up shooting for Sports Communications and had a lot of images posted on the georgiadogs.com site. It was pretty exciting being apart of such a huge event and shoot alongside some big photographers. I really liked some of the shots I took so I’ll try and post a good amount.

Sports recap: Men’s bball ‘08

Shooting mens bball is significantly different from women’s. For one thing, there are a ton of fans that come out. However, the louder and larger crowd isn’t what challenges me, instead it’s the crowd on the sidelines as there are a lot more photographers covering these games. Scouting out and claiming your spot under the goal or closer to the corner becomes much more important if you want to get a clear shot. Also, the game is so much faster which requires adjusting... following the ball can be difficult at these games at first! But, I really enjoyed shooting the guys. We ended up being pretty good: claiming the SEC title and making it to the NCAA tournament! It was really exciting. The press kept referring to us as the “Cinderella Dogs.”

I only shot a few basketball games this spring, but it was a lot of fun. I was difficult with only one camera body to switch between lens in order to get the tighter shot near the basket as well as the shot coming down court. However, I ended up loving the fast paced nature of the game and catching those exciting moments under the net.

Spring Semester @ the paper: Highlights

Ok, so I was really busy this semester and completely slacked off on posting. So I decided to go through everything I shot and post some of my favorites. As a staff photog at the Red&Black, I was able to shoot a lot of meetings and speakers, but also a lot of other exciting and fun events.
This first image is from an interview with a Hiroshima survivor as he answered questions through his translator. It was an honor to meet and talk with Mr. Taramoto. He has an incredible story and a heart to share what he went through with others.
He shared his experiences with a group of students at the SLC while here at UGA.

R&B: Silent Protest

On Wed I shot a silent protest at the Tate Center. It was perfect timing because I needed a general news assignment for class on Thurs. Four students from a rhetoric of social movements class came up with the idea to protest and raise awareness for sexual assault and rape by wearing t-shirts, masks, and gags. The shirts said “i’ve been raped” on the front and phrases such as “I am your sister, I am your girlfriend, I am your teacher...” on the back. Many other students heard about the project being created by these four students and joined the movement. Only one photo ran in the paper, however I liked the second shot showing the size of the crowd also.

R&B: UGA Idol Auditions

It was the real deal for American Idol fans here at UGA. Over 100 students showed up at the Tate Center yesterday to audition for UGA Idol. They sang 1-2 songs in front of three judges.
The paper wanted to run some mugs with a name, song, and a quote from people auditioning so I took four mugs and then went into an audition with a few people for the front page shot.

R&B: Women Soccer makes the NCAA Tournament

Monday i went to WOW cafe to shoot the women’s soccer team. the team ate dinner while waiting for the tournament results to be announced. once it finally happened, i only had a few frames to get the excitement. However, it didn’t come out sharp...
i really wish it was sharp, but i like the moment .

R&B: Living masterpieces

This was a very fun assignment I received. The Athens Creative Theatre was putting on a performance of living masterpieces where volunteers dressed up like famous works of art. They had everything from Grant Wood’s “American Gothic,” to Picasso’s “Self Portrait.” There were only a few frames painted and ready when I arrived on Monday, however I was able to get some shots of a few people posing.
Overall, I was happy with the result and had two photos run in the paper. One was the dominant piece on the front page.
