Chip boxes were traditionally used to store kindling next to fireplaces, but this box may be too beautiful for such a purpose. It actually is a perfect size to store magazines.

This chip box is hand-dovetailed. It has a raised panel cherry bottom, and a solid oak handle attached with glue and cut nails. In this particular box, we used cherry that had quite a bit of white wood. We liked the contrast between the white wood and the heartwood. As this piece ages, the white part will stay the same, and the heartwood will slowly darken creating a beautiful patina.

The table is a simple design and extremely durable. The straight top is made from two pieces. The table has a straight skirt, and straight legs. We use our classic double-pinned mortise and tenon joinery to construct this table.

The History Of The Christmas Table and James Redway Furniture Makers.

In 1983 I was working as a research marine biologist for the federal government until I became the victim of government budget cuts, and found myself unemployed. Because of the lack of jobs in my field, I decided to seek other ways of making money, working on my own.

I first dabbled writing consumer computer software for a world that was not ready for the personal computer in 1983.

I then wrote a 350 page trivia book on the television show M*A*S*H, attracting two publishers until it was discovered that someone had beat me to it only 3 weeks before the publishers were to make their final decision.

Next came my home video business attempting to video tape houses for realtors. The realtors were not interested. Next came transferring 8-mm home movies to video, filming weddings, making special family presentations and recording residents valuables for insurance reasons. The public started buying their own cameras and the mystic of video was wearing off quickly.

It was basically one Ralph Kramden idea after the next, until a friend of mine offered me a chance to work as a finisher at a local cabinet shop in Bethlehem Connecticut. During this time I learned a great deal about 18th and 19th century furniture and its construction. In the summer of 1986, I decided to leave the Bethlehem shop and start my own business, not making cabinets or custom kitchens, but rather making tables instead.

I came across a 1760 Breakfast Table design, that intrigued me. The table had tapered legs, a cupid’s bow design, and a chamfered table top. But it was large, heavy and boxey looking.

I took the design, scaled it down to a small side table size, increased the overhangs, made the legs more slender and tapered on all sides, created a reveal at the skirt, and modified the cupid’s bow. The result was that I had created a beautiful little side table that would become our signature piece.

I made four tables, and decided to sell the first two and gave the other two to my mother as a birthday present. In September 1986 I signed up for a local art show on the town green, and sold both tables right away. Success finally, only too have the first table sold returned because a small crack had developed in one of the legs. This was the first Christmas Table and it was full of flaws. I still use this table to show woodworking beginners what not to do when making a small table. (see below)

The Woodbury Mirror combines the beauty of flowers with the warm texture of wood. Back in 1981 we came up with a way to make "Flower Photograms." Utilizing a unique process in photography, freshly cut flowers were carefully arranged between glass. In the darkroom we flashed light through the arrangement onto Cibrachrome II color photography paper. The result, a quality print with the softness of watercolors and the illusion of pressed flowers.
Unlike other types of photography, Cibrachrome II prints do not lose their color or fade with age. We have mirrors over 20 years old that look as fresh as the day we picked the flowers. Using photographs to make mirrors was always a great idea, but has been limited by the fact that photographs do not stand up to light, fading away with time. In 1981 James and Liza Redway began creating photograms using Cibrachrome II photography. Unlike other types of photography, Cibrachrome II prints do not lose their color or fade with age. We have now perfected the process using our computers and can create an archival print using archival pigments that will last in excess of 70 years, so will never have to worry about this image fading.
