The INCLUDE Grant
Perth Amboy Middle Schools
The INCLUDE Grant
Implementing New Curricular Learning with
Universally Designed Experiences
(INCLUDE)
As one of the awarded districts for The INCLUDE Grant, Perth Amboy is implementing the grant activities across 3 grade levels in its two middle schools. The four phases of the grant are as follows:
Phase I (Planning) January 2008 - August 2008
An Inclusive Practices Team (IPT) was formed in the district, comprised of central administration, teachers, parents, and Higher Education partners. Two non-public schools in the district were invited to collaborate with the district IPT to bring grant services to their teachers and students. Two 5th grade classrooms were formed in the Middle Schools, and one each in Assumption Catholic and Perth Amboy Catholic Schools. The IPT planned together to create classes where the grant environment could thrive and support inclusive settings where the framework for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) could flourish. Teachers were chosen and professional development plans were formulated with our Higher Ed Partners/The Center for Innovative Education at Kean University. Teacher training and collaborative planning on the IPT is all geared toward ensuring that implementing teachers have an understanding of the strategies and tools to meet the needs of all students. Participating students in this grant project are scheduled to move from year to year with participating teachers over the next three years.
Phase II September 2008 - August 2009
A full school year of implementation in two 5th grade classrooms; continued professional development and in-class coaching support; planning for two 6th grade teachers.
Phase II September 2009 - August 2010
Implementation in two 6th grade classrooms; continued professional development and in-class coaching support; planning for two 7th grade teachers.
Phase II September 2010 - August 2011
Grant implementation in two 7th grade classrooms; continued professional development and in-class coaching support; planning to sustain grant principles throughout the district.
Throughout all phases of the grant, the Inclusive Practices Team will support the INCLUDE classroom learning community and promote transition of grant concepts and goals to other areas of the curriculum.
