ODU Biology Advising

2010

Hi!  I’m Dr. Kerry Kilburn, Chief Departmental Advisor in Biological Sciences.  I coordinate undergraduate advising for all Biology majors and, along with a group of outstanding individuals, help make sure that all Biology majors get the advising services they need.  You can learn more about me here at my personal website.

I’ve organized this website as efficiently as I can to make sure you can find the information you need.  The pages fall into two broad categories: academic advising information and biology career information.  You should read the academic advising pages carefully (preferably in order!) and refer back to them frequently.  The career information pages are a good place to begin as you think about what you actually want to do with your degree and how to get there.

Please let me know if you have questions about our program in general or advising specifically.  You can reach me at kkilburn@odu.edu.  I look forward to hearing from you

Welcome to our advising site

Everything you need to know about advising and the undergraduate curriculum in Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University.

For more information about the Department of Biological Sciences and our undergraduate degree program, visit the ODU Biology Department’s website here.

  1. 1.Advising Hours” is where I post my current advising hours as well as walk-in hours for the Advising Center.

  2. 2.About Advising” introduces you to our philosophy of academic advising.

  3. 3.Advising Benchmarks” outlines what you should know and be able to do as you become increasingly familiar with your degree program and career goals.

  4. 4.Who’s My Advisor” explains who you should be seeing for advising as you progress through your degree program.

  5. 5.On the “Advising Staff” page you’ll find names, photos, contact information, and brief descriptions of the specialties of each of the individuals on our advising staff.

  6. 6.The “Catalog and Curriculum” page explains how to link to ODU’s online catalogs back to 2004 and provides direct l inks to the most up-to-date Biology curriculum sheets.   Sample 4-year curricula will be added to help with your degree planning.

  7. 7.The “Useful Links” page should be self-explanatory; these are a few of what I think are the most useful pages on the ODU website if you’re an undergraduate.  I’ll probably include some other good stuff there as well.

  8. 8.The blog is where I’ll post advising updates, including information about advising schedules, changes in policies and requirements, and the like.

ACADEMIC ADVISING PAGES

CAREER ADVISING PAGES

  1. 1.Success in Biology” explains the essential skills needed for virtually every career in the biological sciences as well as the general level of academic performance necessary for postbaccalaureate work.

  2. 2.Careers in Biology”  provides links to information about the common career goals I hear from Biology majors.  It’s not exhaustive, but is a good place to start looking for career ideas and to gain a realistic understanding of the training and experiences you’ll need to succeed.
