Trike Flying with Kirby
Trike Flying with Kirby
I took up flying hang gliders in the 90’s but soon turned to flying trikes because they offered me more air time. At first I was flying under FAA Part 103 rules in a Happy Valley trike, made my Jimmy Dill in South Carolina, and under an Airborne Wizard wing. The Wizard wing is all about lift and carrying capability but it is not about speed.
I soon traded my Happy Valley trike in for a single place Aquilair with a LaMouette 12.9 meter wing. I had a trike that flew at about 60 MPH and it was a high performance wing that could turn on a dime and it was easy to maneuver. Its shortcoming was a small gas tank and a gas guzzling Rotax 503 engine that could only give me a about a 2 hour range. Also it had no capability to carry gear.
So now I have moved on to a P&M Quik. It is fast and it is capable of cross country. I have flown it from my home airport in Jefferson, Georgia to Michigan and Illinois, Georgetown, SC, and near Biloxi, MS. I am now flying under Sport Pilot rules. Sport Pilot rules allow me to fly under VFR and daytime conditions. I am also allowed to fly into certain towered airports.
I will try to keep this site updated so check back often.
