Teaching with Cameras

Turning Toys into Tools

Teaching with Technology

Excite your students with projects that use cameras in the classroom.

Digital cameras have become affordable and accessible for almost everyone, and kids love to take pictures!

As we look at the technological toys and gadgets that kids have at their disposal these days, it becomes important that we harness that enthusiasm! Typically the toys that excite kids are banned from school. I am asking you to shift that paradigm and think about how we can use those toys to create learning experiences that not only meet our learning standards and expectations but also inspire students to want to engage in their learning!

Cameras aren’t often thought of as “toys.” Yet, as I look into the bags of my children I see their camera right along side their Nintendo DS, iPod and phone. If this gadget is important enough for that placement, then it is time to find ways to implement the toy into learning experiences on a regular basis.

In addition, most digital cameras have a movie setting on them for taking short video clips that even have sound!

Need more cameras at school? Ask parents to donate their old cameras when they are updating to newer cameras! The prices are coming down so much that people are changing their cameras more and more often!
