Additional Program Information
(revised November 2008)
The application deadline is March 31st for the following fall.
The admissions process is very competitive, with at least 200 applicants for the twenty places available every Fall.
Applications are reviewed for acceptance beginning in the Spring for the Fall semester of the same year.
There is no waiting list that carries over from year to year. If a student is not accepted for a given Fall, semester they must reapply to be considered for the following year.
All prerequisites must be completed by the deadline date or be in progress with mid-term grades available in ‘your’ application folder in the Admissions Office.
This is a two-year (including summer semesters) full-time day program that must be completed in a sequential manner.
There is no availability of part-time, evening, or weekend components.
There are clinical internships at area hospitals that may require driving as far as Berkshires to the west Wing in Palmer, so reliable transportation is a must.
Clinical rotations are assigned and not chosen by the student.
All accepted students must undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and SORI (Sexual Offender Record Information) or other check
Radiography Minimum Prerequisites

Program Admissions
RADIOGRAPHY ADMISSION CRITERIA
At the conclusion of the Spring semester of program application, students in the applicant pool are scored to determine
their rank order by the Radiography committee made up of the Program Director, Clinical Coordinator and Clinical Instructors. The program uses an academic grid that assists in the admission process. The criteria for admission consideration are based on a point weighted scale as follows:
a. 1 point – for pre-radiography general education course work completed
b. 1 point given for each credit hour of a required general education course completed with a (A) or better by the end of
the Spring semester of program application.
c. 1 point given for a previous degree earned.
d. 1 point – for attending clinical site visit
e. 1 point – applicant’s letter
For example: If the applicant has taken Medical Terminology and got a grade of ‘B’ will only get one point. If the applicant has taken Medical Terminology and got a grade of ‘A’ will only get two points. At the end who ever has more points has a greater chance of getting accepted to the program.
THE APPLICANT’S LETTER (Personal Statement)
The applicant’s letter is a requirement in the Radiography Program admission process and is extremely important as it
helps the committee to know and understand the applicant better. The letter must be typed (word processed), and no
longer than two pages in length and submitted prior to the March 31st deadline. The letter will be graded on the following
criteria:
a. Knowledge of radiography
b. Reasons for entering the program and future goals
c. Health care experiences
d. Other relevant experiences
e. Grammar, spelling, organization etc.
INTERVIEW
It is recommended that the potential applicant meet with the program director for information about the program criteria
before applying to the program and prior to the March 31st deadline.
TECHNICAL STANDARDS
The STCC Radiography Program has specific Technical Standards critical to the success of students in the
clinical/professional program. Students must be able to meet the requirements which include the ability to lift and transfer
patients to and from the x-ray examination table; move, adjust, and manipulate equipment to perform radiographic
procedures; review and evaluate radiographs to determine the quality of the image; communicate orally and in writing
with patients, doctors, and other personnel; follow written and verbal directions. Students must be able to demonstrate
these standards with or without reasonable accommodations in order to succeed in the program. A copy of the Technical
Standards will be sent to each applicant to review and sign certifying that they can meet those standards.
OBSERVATION EXPERIENCE
It is recommended that applicants for the clinical/professional program participate in an observation experience at a
radiology/medical imaging center. This option can be requested by calling the program director.
VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE
Although not a requirement, volunteer experience is recommended and is very helpful in making a career choice.
CRIMINAL CHECKS
CORI and SORI background checks are performed by STCC at no cost to the student and is performed through the
Criminal Systems History Board according to EEOH guidelines. This is detailed in the Student Handbook on-line at:
GRADUATES OF THE PROGRAM
Graduates receive an Associate of Science degree (DMIR AS.) and are eligible to take the certification examination of the
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to become certified as a Registered Technologist, R.T. (R).
NOTE: The ARRT requires all examinees to disclose any prior felony or misdemeanor conviction. If this situation
applies to a student, it is recommended they contact the ARRT at (612) 687-0048 to discuss their particular case.
This process is to prevent the student from having completed the A.S. degree program and being ineligible to take
the ARRT exam.
