I am a doctoral student in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University and anticipate graduating in 2012. Thus far, I have taught courses in public speaking and interpersonal communication. I earned a BA in Communication Studies from Marist College in 2003 and a MS in Communication from Illinois State University in 2005. Prior to enrolling at Ohio University, I worked at School of Visual Arts in New York City as the Associate Director of Institutional Research.
My research interests are primarily situated in new communication technology, particularly online gaming. I have conducted research examining offensive or objectionable language used in online multiplayer matches of a first person shooter (FPS) game. More recently, I have examined issues of gender in multiplayer matches of the video game Halo 3. In that study we employed an experimental design, with three experimental conditions, to examine how other gamers respond to gender voice in the multiplayer environment. During actual gameplay we broadcasted prerecorded audio clips of a male voice, female voice, or in the case of the control condition no voice.
I am an active member of the National Communication Association, particularly the Human Communication and Technology Division. In the past I have served as a reviewer for several divisions/interest groups of NCA and Central States Communication Association.
