“When you do nothing, you feel overwhelmed and powerless. But when you get involved, you feel the sense of hope and accomplishment that comes from knowing you are working to make things better. ”
Maya Angelou
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is an independent 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health.
It is estimated by the American Cancer Society in 2008 (the last year for which statistics are available) that about 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed among women in the United States. At this time there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
In 2008, ACS estimated that about 40,480 women would die from breast cancer in the United States. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer.
In men, 1,990 new cases were projected in 2008, with 450 deaths
