June 17 Meeting

It was another beautiful morning on the bay at the Yacht Club.  Mary observed that just one more meeting remained in her presidential year.  All of us are in her debt for her service.  Just one more to go, Mary!!!

This is another abbreviated newsletter because your editor is gearing up for another job. Please bear with us in this transition.

Paul Strauss and Tanya Aynessazian  gave an important and informative presentation on Bay Clinic and its role in this community. They are a Federally Qualified Health Center.  That means (among other things) that they take any patient, regardless of their ability to pay.  They have 140 employees and volunteers.  Their budget has grown from $7 million to $11 in the last 3 years.  20% of their patient population is uninsured.  They have 16,000 patients and 48,000 visits per year. Here are some links to their facilities:

•Hilo Family Health Center

•Ka`u Family Health Center

•Kea`au Family Health Center

•Pahoa Family Health Center

•Pahoa Women's Health Center

•Business Admin Office

With the dearth of primary care physicians on this island, Bay Clinic’s role becomes more and more important.  51% of their board of directors is made up of patients of the Bay Clinic.  Bay Clinic’s services include, Primary Care, Women’s Health, Dental, and Behavioral Health.

This reporter was once again impressed by the quality of our membership.  With Howard Ainsley (Hilo Medical Center) and Paul Strauss as members, we have a wonderful opportunity to get great perspectives on the state of health care on this island and state.  For more information on Bay Clinic visit http://www.bayclinic.org/default.asp

Club Business

All members are encouraged to pay their dues promptly.

Mary announced that invoices for missed meetings are going out soon. These missed meetings charges are very important to the fiscal health of the club.  As many of you know, we have a minimum charge from the Yacht Club for each meeting.  When we don’t collect that amount ($400), we must make up the difference out of club funds.  Every one of those dollars are dollars that are unavailable for the work we do in this community and the world.  So number one, please come to our meetings.  Number two, please pay your missed meeting charges.

Program for June 24

You will want to attend this meeting.  UH Manoa Chancellor, Virginia Hinshaw will speak.  Let’s have a good crowd for her.

Installation Dinner-Last Call

The Installation dinner is Wednesday night, July 1, 6pm, at the Yacht Club.  This is your chance to thank Mary and the 2008-9 board for their award winning performance.  Contact Jay Curlee or Gary Young  if you want to come and haven’t signed up yet.  It’s $40.
