Lexden History Group

Welcome to the website of the Lexden History Group.

In the nineteenth century Lexden was a small village on the outskirts of Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town. Now it is a seamless part of that town.

The Lexden History Group started in 2006 after informal discussions amongst a few residents interested in local, family and house history.   Our first public meeting attracted over 150 people, sixty of whom signed up as members that night.

We aim to arrange an interesting programme of year round talks and summer walks and encourage a cross-flow of information to help members in their own researches.  We also plan to have a regular Group Project, looking at one particular aspect of Lexden’s past. Our current theme (before our memories fade) is “Lexden in Wartime”.

Membership of the group is not restricted to Lexden residents, anyone who has links with this area or interested in Colchester is warmly welcomed.

Lexden History Group is a member of the British  Association for Local History.
