Anyone who has spent time in the UK this summer will surely have heard the Elbow classic, ‘One Day Like This’. Yes, it is a superb anthem, but it’s not the reason for including it here.
In Chapter 5 of this series I made reference to increasing quality of video capture by upping the frame rate, not for the purpose of slow motion, as made famous in recent months by LG’s Viewty, but rather to produce a faster refresh rate and hence give a more convincing illusion of reality.
A byproduct of capturing 60 frames per second is the ability to half the speed without sacrificing temporal resolution. The effect - as wonderfully demonstrated in the Elbow video seen above - is a beautifully smooth slow motion effect that is not possible by slowing down a 30 fps to 15 fps.
Of course, none of these more usually video formats and procedures is essential to the success of Nokia’s first HD video capture phone, but they would certainly help to show just how serious Nokia is about content creation and creativity.
