I was supposed to be playing kick ball, but at the last minute the session was cancelled (too many folks wanting to take a longer weekend over Labor Day w/e) so I had a few unexpected hours free. I needed to catch up with Don, Frank and Ross, after a quite successful meeting with the XBOX team the day before so I headed down to the track to talk Team Seattle and to get a few laps in.
Before arriving I wasn’t sure how many laps I was going to do. I had been in to see Barrier Porsche the day before to get a big screw removed from my rear tyre (ended up replacing it) and knew I only had 30% of pad remaining.
So, in typical fashion I didn’t take it easy and had a few blistering laps where it felt amazing. I then started to run low on gas so I decided to attempt a controlled drift in 3b (the track was empty) to learn to control oversteer if it ever hit me unexpectedly. After 5 or so successful attempts I came around for a bit of a bigger slide and sure enough, I over cooked it and spun! No harm done but I did fill the car up with gravel and had a ding on my pride!
I went back to the pit area where Don, Ross and crew looked at me with that, “you know what you did” look and it was at that point Don said “how about a drive in a PRO3 car”. I couldn’t really say now and I have to tell you the experience was fantastic. First big thing I noticed (before the noise and the vibrations) was the fact there were NO driver aids at all. No traction, stability control, no ABS it was just machine and me. I had such a great time. Slick tyres really are pretty cool too!
Key learnings from the day are to continue to work on braking better. I’m still coming in too early on the brakes. 3a especially. Perhaps today it was because I was low on brake pad but all in all I still have this issue.
Today will go down as a day to remember in my racing experience.
