WHAT HAPPENED?

After months of planning and discussions with the new venue in Qingdao’s old town, the people at PICHAIYUAN decided to...change their mind. During soundcheck of band number 8 (of nine), and just two hours before the festival was due to kick-off, the electricity was unexpectedly switched off, damaging some of the sound equipment in the process. We then spent about two hours trying desperately to persuade them to allow us to continue, as planned, but to no avail. It’s worth mentioning that we had in our possession signed and ‘chopped’ documents with Pichaiyuan venue, and had the full support of the Shinan cultural bureau who had been involved with choosing this venue.

The Show Must Go On...New Venue...

It was an incredibly difficult decision, other than cancel the whole thing and disappoint a lot of people, we felt we had no choice but to quickly switch the venue to CLUB NEW YORK, which although meant downsizing, would allow us to get started with LIVE MUSIC within 90 minutes of making a decision. i.e. there was now no time for sound-checking etc.

The Bands...

We kept our prior commitments to each of the bands - 8 of the 9 agreed to go on, at the new venue. The only one that did not (Victorious War) had other plans in the evening so unfortunately had to drop out.

The Public...

We offered to return money to everybody who had a ticket - so that nobody lost out. Most people already there simply came with us to the new venue. We sent out hundreds of SMS messages, called friends etc, to get the message out that the venue had changed. Several hundred people turned up. We managed, under duress, to pull it off. It was stressful and tiring, and far from ideal (the venue simply wasn’t large enough), but we had about 8 hours of superb live music and everyone had a great time.

What’s Next?

Right now we have no plans for a MAX 10 - but ask us again in a few weeks and see how we feel :)

APOLOGIES TO EVERYONE THAT FELT AGGRIEVED BY THE TURN OF EVENTS ON SATURDAY 11 APRIL. IT WAS 100% OUT OF OUR CONTROL. THE PEOPLE AT THE VENUE SIMPLY CHANGED THEIR MIND, AT THE VERY LAST MINUTE.

Photo Galleries

In the coming days and weeks we will be uploading photos of the bands who played at MAX 09:

The Opening Night

The festival kicked off with a film and fashion night at LA VILLA on Wednesday 8th April. The evening featured both PLASTERED and KORYO TOURS from Beijing and doubled as the launch party for a new shop ‘MyMài  买卖’ selling cool products from both Plastered, Koryo and REDSTAR amongst others. The shop will become the place to buy Chinese indie music CDs, tee-shirts, retro dongxi etc.  Photos of the model show etc will be added here very soon - watch this space.
