*---------Canceling the Free Newspaper----------
You know that newspaper that shows up for free every Wednesday on your driveway? Well, on a rare occasion, I'll read it. But most times, I leave it out long enough to get rained on and then toss it in the trash. Last week, I finally got fed up and called the number below. The paper we get comes from a group of newspapers that are based in Marietta.
If you enjoy that paper, then ignore the rest of this email.
However, if you too are tired of getting it, and I know a few who've expressed those feelings, I have good news.
You can unsubscribe. Just call 770 454 9388 and give them your address. That's all.

----------------New Walmart-----------------
* Post from Robin - This blog has a pretty good track record on openings and closings.

----------------The Mall-----------------
* If you've driven around the mall lately, you've probably seen the blue zoning notices. Golden Corral wants to build a new restaurant on the mall property. If I'm reading the map they sent right, it will go in over on the corner where the carnival and Christmas trees are sold, on Scott Blvd and right behind Checker's.
So while I've heard nothing further that a Zaxby's is going up between Pier 1 and the package store (the lot where Toco Hills Color Lab stood), at least the Golden Corral would be a new construction. I think that's a positive sign for the neighborhood and the economy.

----------------Breakins-----------------
*Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that we all need to be a little more careful and remember the world is NOT filled with people like the ones that live in our neighborhood.
I went to leave this morning, got in my car and thought to myself that I really left my car a mess. No, someone had taken all my toll change, my IPOD transmitter and various CDs.
Didn't take the $120.00 dress that I was returning to Macy's or the $80.00 candlesticks. I think they're mission was money - so they netted about $15.00 in quarters and maybe a few CDs (luckily I had already burned them) and an IPOD gadget.
Just a wake-up call that's sometimes a good thing.

*Sad news - Saturday morning, we went to get quarters for a parking meter and realized our change (about $5.00 in quarters) and $6.00 in cash were missing. Also missing was a laptop computer in a computer bag behind the seat were missing. Thankfully the computer is and password protected and insured through work, since it was a work computer. They left a bunch of other stuff in the seats, but we each thought we'd just left our car a mess. We also are missing an old black handled, small, kitchen-type, serrated knife that we were using to open bags of mulch. It was not inside the car, but near it on the wall. We do not appear to be missing anything else but we will check the outside area as well.
This morning, we have called the Dekalb County Police Non-Emergency line and they are sending someone out to take a report.
Please check your cars and notify the police of anything missing, especially from cars. It appears that at least 3 cars [up to 5] may have gotten "hit."

NonEmergency Line
The machine answers "Dekalb Non-Emergency Admin Line" but having called it today, it is the correct line for non-emergencies. 678.937.2852

*Neighbors,
Please make non-emergency reports to the police. In my partial walk around the 'hood today, I spoke with several folks. It seems the breakins Friday night are up to 5 or 6 at my count; mostly from unlocked/partially locked cars in driveways and on the street. Taken were loose change & small amounts of cash, tech gadgets, CD's, and 2 laptop computers. In two cases, victims were actively in-and-out-of their own cars during Friday afternoon and apparently left them unlocked. One car was on the street; the rest were in driveways.
While each individual loss is relatively easy to dismiss as insignificant, "just teenagers causing mischief because school is out", it is particularly troubling for several reasons (1) the number of breakins, (2) home owners were home when these breakins occurred, which means the potential existed for escalation to greater crimes, (3) we have a lot of houses for sale on the 'hood and they may or may not be checked as daily as occupied homes, and finally (4) we don't want to be known as a target-rich neighborhood for any type of criminals.

*News from the Ice Cream Social:
1.Apparently there was a man from the DOT doing surveys of the road, as a result of the TV coverage. That man commented that the police reports do not show “that many wrecks.” The assumption is that not all wrecks are being reported to law enforcement. Take pictures, report accidents to law enforcement.
2.Is there any interest in starting a neighborhood garden group?
3.We have several new to the neighborhood families who were able to attend the ice cream social.
4.Roni has a slideshow that will be loaded up on here as soon as we figure it out.
5.Some folks were taking pics at the ice cream social and they will be loaded on here at some point.
6.Any more news...please pass along via the email server and I’ll post it here.
