Pianos are built to endure an average of 50 years of service (many last twice this long). With some 5,000 + parts involved, it’s not surprising to learn that your piano may need periodic servicing such as tuning and internal adjustments (regulating).
Typically, these fine instruments require the following care:
• Tuning - at least once a year. Even in an air-conditioned home, the varying humidity causes swelling and shrinking of the delicate wooden parts. If a piano is not tuned regularly, the pitch will vary according to the surrounding environmental conditions. With 40,000 pounds of pressure being exerted from the string tension, it is understandable that this is the most frequent, and most common care a piano receives.
• Touch - as you play a piano, minor adjustments, a series of regulations, are required to keep the instrument responding correctly to your touch. (Much like an automobile requires periodic adjustments). The playing mechanism (and the pedals) are subject to wear and tear, and may need to be adjusted, repaired, or replaced.
• Tone - the condition of the hammer felt greatly affects the tone of a piano, and it can be adjusted to produce brighter or darker tones. Worn hammers have harsh tones. This can be remedied through a procedure called voicing, and it is commonly performed on high-quality pianos.
