The Federal republic of Germany

Friendship Award presented to Larry Marsh

German Culture Center Coordinator, Larry Marsh, was presented The Federal Republic of Germany Friendship Award on September 7, 2008 in recognition of his efforts on behalf of German-American relations.

Honorary German Consul Lansing Hecker presented the award on behalf of Klaus Schairoth, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, who noted Marsh’s endeavors in fostering and sustaining friendship between Germany and the United States.  He has led the German Culture Center for eight years.

The German Culture Center is located on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis and is part of the Center for International Studies. Since its founding, the GCC has become a key institution for area German teachers, for the German American community, and for those in the general public who wish to know more about German life, language and culture.

Marsh and the Center have been instrumental in bringing performers, speakers and exhibitions to the St. Louis area.  The Center is currently hosting an exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.  The exhibit is on display in the Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis through October 12, 2008.

Marsh studied in Germany in the early 60’s, returning as a Fulbright Teacher in Heidelberg.  He taught history and humanities for 34 years before joining the faculty and staff of the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  Also active in music and theatre, he was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Arts for Life.
