“Freedom Without Walls”
Campus Weeks
The German Culture Center was pleased to present a series of events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Presented as part of the German Information Center’s “Freedom Without Walls” projects, the events brought hundreds to the UMSL campus.
•October 31 “Teaching About Berlin A workshop for German teachers and future teachers was attended by over 40.
•October 31 “Icons of a Border Installation” Official opening and reception for an exhibit in the Gallery Visio on the UMSL campus.
•November 8 “Berlin in Music” A concert by UMSL faculty and students, including the Arianna String Quartet and the UMSL Harmonists was attend by 100, who then enjoyed an “Ich bin ein Berliner” reception
•November 9 Over 450 high school students and teachers attended a program at 10:00 am. Professor Joyce Mushaben described the events leading up to the Fall. The UMSL Harmonists performed. A panel of UMSL’s German and Russian students discussed the importance of the Fall to the young generation. The new documentary “Freedom Without Walls” was shown.
•November 9 At noon, hundreds of students participated in a ceremonial opening of the wall, produced in cooperation with UMSL’s Theatre Department. Dr. Bernd von Muenchow-Pohl, Director of the German Information Center made opening remarks, followed by a ceremonial breaching of the Wall.
•November 9 Keynote address by Prof. Joyce Mushaben was attended by 85. Her topic: “Be Careful What You Pray For: The Search for Unity in a United Germany.”
•November 12 Opening Reception for Wall Art projects. The three winning projects were diplayed the the UMSL Student Scupture Garden
•November 12, 16 and 18 “Berlin in Film” Three films were presented in the Museum Room of the UMSL Honors College.
•November 18 Winners of “Freedom Without Walls” video competition announced.
