2009 - SCU GERMAN SUMMER PROGRAM
2009 - SCU GERMAN SUMMER PROGRAM
An absolute gem of an experience, the SCU German Summer Program is operated by Prof. Tabbert-Jones in partnership with the Albert-Ludwig Universität in Freiburg. Albert-Ludwig Universität provides language classes, housing, and co-curricular activities at a comparatively low price. Professor Tabbert-Jones serves as on-site director and offers a class in Contemporary German culture. This year's discussion topics included the following: Transportation, Food & Drink, Leisure Activities, Favorite Places in Freiburg, Special Topics & Stories. In their parting comments students were overwhelmingly enthusiastic. The program is open to students of all skill levels.
The cost of the program has been partially offset by donations from Geoff & Josie Fox. As in past years, Geoff & Josie stayed in Freiburg for the duration of the summer program. Their presence was greatly appreciated.
Albert Ludwig (Freiburg) University was founded in 1457. It has been offering summer courses in German language and culture since 1911. Currently the program attracts more than 300 students. It is a unique opportunity to meet and study with students from around
the world.
Freiburg has a population of 220,000 with a university enrollment of about 20,000. Located at the foot of the Black Forest in the south-west corner of Germany, Freiburg is a short train ride to Strasbourg, France and Basel, Switzerland, offering students a variety of travel experiences. Freiburg boasts the best weather in Germany and is considered the “greenest” city in a very environmentally aware country.
The university, along with the cathedral, is located in the “old town pedestrian zone” where a farmer’s market draws hundreds of shoppers Monday through Saturday.
In 2009 twelve Santa Clara students took part in the program. Read their impressions by clicking on their photo.
