Mac Game Arcade & Macheist

Lots of free Mac software today. Not freeware, but paid aps offered for free for a very short time. First up, for the next four days, Mac Games Arcade is offering a free game a day for the next five days. The games usually run around 20 bucks a piece. They include Pangea Arcade, Bullet Candy and Nanny Mania. Follow the instructions on the site.

Mac Giving Tree

Macheist is giving away some free software as well, most to be opened on Christmas Day. So far the presents include synergy and the best-selling Enigmo 2. I’ve bought their mac software bundles before and there’s usually one app in the set that makes it worth it. But these six apps are free.

One last one, Jumsoft is giving away free iweb, keynote and mail stationary.

On a completely unrelated note, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy’s son Spencer has a blog. For his birthday, he got to play drums at Madison Square Garden with Neil Young. Awesome.

Christmas Disco

Two words: Christmas Disco.

Everything is made better with disco beat. There is no musical style that does not benefit from discofacation.

This comes from the last good national radio station WFMU. The last college-style station. There’s a bunch of free music all over the site.

Go go go. Beep Beep.

Aquarium Drunkard

Great live music today. I ran across this site when I was directed from another site to some free Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy songs. When I found the songs, I also ran across a nice music site, Aquarium Drunkard. The site hosts a weekly podcast of music and has live music from a lot of bands I like; Pavement, Wilco, Lou Reed, Sufjan Stevens and many more. Yea. The Aquarium Drunkard show is even on XM/Sirius.

WetMachine

Three full books to read. I usually don’t post free stuff I found on Boing Boing because I figure most people already read the site, but the link to the free book from Boing Boing led to two other odd sci-fi books by the author, John Sundman. I haven’t read them, but skimmed The Pains for the nice artwork. The Books are:

The Pains, a relatively short book, nicely illustrated on the web.

Acts of the Apostles, a free PDF download.

Cheap Complex Devices, a free PDF book written by computers, sort of.

Another bonus, some nice interactive fiction piece called Everybody Dies. You’ll need java. It’s described as a “text adventure video game.”

260-Unsolicited

Oh, I liked this comic strip from RPG writer Robin D. Laws. So, I included it. Nyeah.

Oni Comics

It’s really easy to get free comics on the internet. Especially the smaller publishers know that comics can be like crack. Give ‘em the first issue for free and they’ll be hooked and pay money to mainline more. From time to time, I’ll point you to a new free comic book page and smaller publishers. One smaller publisher, Onipress, makes some nice comics. They have two movies coming out based on their comics Whiteout (starring Kate Beckinsale) and Scott Pilgrim (starring Michael Cera). I bought and enjoyed Whiteout for its remote setting and unconventional heroine. They also license the Tek Janssen series, Stephen Colbert’s parody Sci-Fi character. Most of the comics have interesting artwork and different plots with nary a superhero in sight.

Here’s a whole page of free comic links. The downloads are in CBR format, so you’ll need to get a reader if you don’t have one. There’s links to readers on the site as well. There’s some nice comics on the site and support your local comic book shop. You know the drill.

Lugaru

Lugaru is a third person action game about a sword wielding rabbit on a hell-bent mission of revenge, It’s for Mac and PC. The game usually costs 20 bucks, but the developers are giving it away for free until Christmas to promote the sequel. It’s a little bit complicated. You have to go to their Facebook page and sign up to be a fan of the new game and sign up for an event. Then, they’ll e-mail you some links for the game on Christmas. They explain it all on their website.

It’s a tiny bit involved, but you don’t give away any personal info and it’s a different way to promote their new game. So, hey, free game.
