Project Cornerstone - ABC Parent Program

Assets Building Champion @ Garden Gate Elementary School

GOALS OF ABC PARENT PROGRAM

1.)Teach concepts of student-to-student respect.

2.)Help in creating a common language and vocabulary about student respect for school community amongst all adults on campus, parents and students.

3.)Develop social skills for all students for being caring, responsible, and dealing effectively with bullying behavior.

4.)Increase student achievement, learning and interpersonal competence by improving school climate.

5.)Increase the number of caring adults that students feel increased levels of support and value.

6.)Increase the number of developmental assets in all children and parents.

7.)To have one ABC Parent Volunteer in every class so that all students, teachers are learning the same lessons and using the same language.

How do we do this?

Every month, we read a selected children book to the class, conduct discussion, and activity; 3 hours commitment a month (1 hour in class, 1 hour book meeting with the ABC lead, and 1 hour prep); for nine books total.

Requirements to participate in the ABC Parent Program:

• A full school year commitment so students can build a significant relationship with you.

• Attend a one and a half hour group study on “developmental assets,” that children need to become successful adults. The upcoming dates are             Sept. 17th and Oct. 7th  from 9:30 to 11:00am at United Way Building, 1922 The Alameda, San Jose 95126.

• Fill out an online Project Cornerstone/YMCA volunteer application.

Achievement of Project Cornerstone at Garden Gate last year:

• 2009-10 is the 4th year Project Cornerstone program is in place.

• 5th grade “Expect Respect” - Cornerstone Kids served as monitors on the primary playground to help solve conflicts, modeled, and encouraged younger kids to be caring and helpful toward each other.

• Cornerstone Kids initiate a Fuzzy-gram program to recognize good friendship, helpful attitudes, caring behavior among all children.

• A 6 weeks parent training class about assets building at home and in the community was an eye opening and helpful resource for many parents.
